Government quota in private medical colleges refers to the seat reservation for students admitted through the state counselling. Not all private medical colleges offer government quota seats for admission. The eligibility criteria for this usually highlight the NEET UG exam qualification. CMC Vellore and KIMS Bhubaneswar are some of the few private medical colleges offering admission through government quota seats.

On average, around 10-25% of the total seats in the MBBS course are usually reserved for the government quota in these colleges. Apart from qualifying the entrance exam, students must also meet academic and other requirements for admission. Interestingly, seats in the private medical colleges through government quota are offered at a lower cost when compared to management or NRI quota.

Eligibility Criteria for Government Quota in Private Medical Colleges

The eligibility criteria to apply to private medical colleges under the government quota are as follows:

  • Students must have passed Class 12th with Science.

  • You must have Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Mathematics, and English as core subjects in Class 12th.

  • Students must score at least 50% marks in their Class 12th qualifying exam.

  • It is mandatory for all to clear the NEET UG exam with the qualifying cutoff.

  • The admission process will be conducted through the NEET state counselling only.

  • The lower age limit is 17 years and the upper age limit is between 25 years.

  • Applying students must be Indian citizens.

  • Students must comply with the domicile criterion for admission.

Admission to Government Quota in Private Medical Colleges

To secure admission under the government quota in private medical colleges, you must refer to the steps mentioned below:

Step 1: Qualifying the Entrance Test

  • It is mandatory to clear the NEET entrance exam for admission under the government quota in private medical colleges.

  • Students should secure the minimum NEET score for admission as specified by the respective colleges.

  • Selective few private colleges also accept state-level entrance exams for admission under the government quota.

Step 2: Participate in NEET State Counselling

  • After successfully clearing the entrance exam, students must participate in the respective NEET state counselling process.

  • Students will be required to select the ‘state quota’ admission and their desired private medical college in the choice-filling.

  • The seats will be allocated based on the seat availability under the government quota in the private medical college. Other factors of seat allocation include the student’s performance in NEET and admission cutoff.

  • For instance, when a student has not appeared for the NEET entrance exam, some private medical colleges consider merit-based admissions as well.

Step 3: Admission Course Fee Submission

  • Once the seats are allocated, students will be asked to pay the course fee to confirm their seats for admission.

  • The admission fee will be different for each medical college. The detailed course fee structure for admission is specified on the respective college websites.

  • The admission course fee usually ranges between INR 20,000 to INR 70,000 on average.

Step 4: Document Verification

  • The final stage of admission is the document verification and physical reporting to the allotted colleges.

  • During this stage, students are required to produce their documentation proof for eligibility to the college authorities.

  • Some private medical colleges may conduct a personal interview round for final verification.
