DU to Introduce BSc Honours in Environmental Science from 2021
DU, one of the premier universities in India, is commencing BSc Honours in Environmental Science from 2021. The department at present has only masters and PhD courses.
Delhi University (DU) is set to launch BSc (Hons) in Environmental Science from the next admission cycle. Six colleges affiliated to the university have shown interest in introducing the course from 2021 onwards.
The University Grants Commission (UGC) has given a go-ahead to the three-year course. Although the selection process for the course is yet to be decided, admission to most of the DU courses depends on a set cut-off for the year which is calculated by taking the best of four subjects in class 12. For any Honours course, the same is considered with one being a major. However, this would be a problem for BSc (Hons) in Environmental Science as most schools under CBSE do not provide Environmental Science as an elective subject in the 12th standard.
A minimum of 24 to a maximum of 32 seats in each college would be available for interested candidates. The Environmental Science department currently offers Masters and Ph.D. level programmes.
The new DU B.Sc (Hons) Course in Environmental Science will have 140 credits spread across 26 papers. Students would be required to pass eight electives and four ability-enhancement courses. Further on, as per UGC guidelines, two will be skill enhancement papers in the entire six-semester duration.

According to reports, the maximum number of candidates come for Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) schools. 2019 DU Admissions got around 2.70 lakh applications for UG courses, of which only 70,000 were not from CBSE schools.
