Six Indian Institutes Collaborate for the First Joint-Indian German Research Training Group

Six Indian Institutes of Higher Education have collaborated for the first time on a joint Indian-German research training group on using Bio Big Data Science in biological applications.

The program looks at educating first-class young researchers in this area. The leading institutes are IIT Kanpur, IIT Guwahati, IIT Madras , University of Allahabad , Jawaharlal Nehru University and the University of Delhi. The universities they are collaborating with are Biotechnology Department under the Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India, and Heidelburg University, Germany.

Dr. Michael J. Winckler, the Program Coordinator at Heidelberg University said he is looking forward to longterm research collaborations with leading Indian institutes. The topic of this research is relevant for developing biotechnology industry. The training group will establish as many as 50 Ph.D. subjects which will be under the supervision of Research tandems including scientists from India and Germany.

The first funding of the programme will take place from 2019-2025 and the investment for it will be 3 million euro from (Heidelberg University and DBT).

Talking about this collaboration, Dr. Karthik Raman who is the Associate Professor and Coordinator for the Initiative of Biological Systems Engineering (IBSE) at IIT Madras said considering the level of expertise in the field of data science at IBSE and at the Robert Bosch Centre for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (RBCDSAI) at IIT Madras, it will be helpful in collaborating with the University of Heidelberg in the areas of biological data analysis, and also to train future leaders in these areas.
