Medical Education in India 
India is making tremendous progress both in medical science and medical education. The Madras Medical College established on February 2, 1835, is the first medical college of the county. There are 381 medical colleges - both government and private managed, with around 50,000 MBBS seats registered with the Medical Council of India (MCI). The Government aims to increase the current doctor-patient ratio from 1:2000 to 1:1000 by this year *
Admission into these medical colleges is done through different entrance examinations. Important Medical Entrance Examinations are-All India Pre Medical Test (AIPMT), All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS), Armed Forces Medical Core Entrance (AFMC), Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), Annamalai University (AU) – Medical Entrance Exam, Association of Management of Unaided Private Medical and Dental Colleges-(Asso-CET), Banaras Hindu University-Pre Medical Test (BHU-PMT), Delhi University Medical-Dental Entrance Test (DUMET) etc. to name a few. 
There are several top medical colleges in India –like All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Delhi, Christian Medical College (CMC) Vellore, Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC) Pune, JIPMER College Puducherry, Maulana Azad Medical College (MAMC) Delhi, Lady Hardinge Medical College (LHMC) Delhi, Madras Medical College Chennai, etc.
The apex bodies that govern the Medical Profession and allied services in the country are- Medical Council of India (MCI), Dental Council of India (DCI), Pharmacy Council of India (PCI), National Board of Examination (NAT Board) etc.
