The legal amendments are an important part of the CLAT 2026 exam. An amendment is basically a change made in the original part of the Indian Constitution. The aspiring lawyers need to know the new acts, amendments to existing acts, constitutional amendments and many more before appearing in CLAT 2026. A lot of times, students struggle to keep up with the legal amendments. But like previous years, this year’s CLAT exam will test the knowledge of the legal changes of the students.

If you want to find out how to keep up with legal amendments for CLAT 2026, give this article a read.

Why Legal Amendments Matter for CLAT 2026

For CLAT 2026, the legal amendments matter for the following reasons:

  • You can be asked to interpret or apply recent changes in law in CLAT questions. So, without prior knowledge of amendments, your answer can go wrong.
  • The students are assessed on the constitutional amendments and recent laws.
  • Judges often make decisions based on changes in the law, so it is important to know how laws have been updated to understand those decisions.
  • Legal Reasoning passages may refer to changes in law (e.g. new rights, modified definitions, expanded or restricted powers).

Strategies to Keep Up with Legal Amendments for CLAT 2026

If you are a law aspirant, you need to know how to keep up with legal amendments for CLAT 2026. We have provided some strategies to help you:

  • Set up a Routine: You can allocate fixed slots every week, 2 to 3 times per week, to check for new legal amendments. On Monday, check PRS India or government news; on Wednesday, read LiveLaw or Bar & Bench for case interpretations; and on Sunday, review what is new and revise all amendments.

  • Maintain your Own Amendment Notebook: Whenever you find a new amendment, note down: name of the Act/Bill, date of enactment or notification, what changed (old vs new), what parts of the CLAT syllabus it is relevant to (e.g. Constitutional Law, Fundamental Rights, etc.). You can also use tools like spreadsheets or apps so you can sort by topic or date.

  • Relate Amendments to Previous Questions: You can try to find or think of hypothetical passages or questions that might use the amendment. Link them to previous CLAT questions; sometimes, older questions may become relevant again if an amendment changes something in an older law.

  • Mock Tests & Application: In mock tests, you can try to use updated laws. This will not only enhance your learning, but also help you understand the application. After mock tests, check whether your answers relate to the old law.

  • Group Studies: Sometimes discussing an amendment with friends helps you catch pieces you might have missed. Teaching someone an amendment is a great way to strengthen your understanding.

List of Important Amendments for CLAT

  • Twenty-Fourth Amendment, 1971: The amendment clearly said that Parliament can change any part of the Constitution, even the fundamental rights, and these changes cannot be challenged in court.

Errors to Avoid During Legal Amendments for CLAT 2026

Some errors that you can avoid to keep up with legal amendments for CLAT 2026 are:

  • Outdated sources: Often, books or study material may not have the newest amendments. Always check the latest version or publication date.

  • Missing notifications: After a law has been passed, it does not mean the implementation or date of effect will also be the same.

  • Partial reading: Some amendments have relevant sections; not all parts of an amendment will matter for CLAT.

  • Misapplication: Just knowing the amendment is not enough; you need to know how it changes legal application, especially in reasoning questions.
