Why JEE Advanced Paper 2 feels tougher than Paper 1?

JEE Advanced Paper 2 often feels tougher due to the shift to numerical and integer-type questions, the lack of option elimination, afternoon fatigue, and consistently difficult Mathematics sections that demand higher accuracy and endurance. Practice intense problem-solving to score well in Paper 2.

JEE Advanced Paper 2 feels harder than Paper 1 because of three reasons: the question format shifts from multiple-choice to integer-type and numerical answers, removing the option elimination safety net that MCQs allow; the afternoon timing means candidates enter Paper 2 already mentally depleted from Paper 1 and Mathematics which is the most time-consuming subject in the exam has been the hardest section in Paper 2 for four of the last five years.

The result is a paper that demands higher accuracy, faster calculation, and stronger endurance all at the same time, in the same three-hour window. In this article, we will walk you through the differences inJEE Advancedpapers and the difficulty level.

How the Structure Differs in JEE Advanced Paper 1 vs Paper 2?

On paper, both sessions look identical. Each carries 180 marks, covers the same syllabus across Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics, and is conducted for three hours. But the question formats inside those three hours are meaningfully different, and that difference is what drives the difficulty gap. The table below highlights the differences in JEE Advanced paper 1 and paper 2:

Paper 1 leans towards multiple-choice questions, while Paper 2 emphasises numerical and integer-type questions, and is generally considered more challenging, testing deeper conceptual understanding. This structural shift from recognition-based MCQs to calculation-heavy numerical answers is the first and most significant reason the difficulty perception changes.

Is the Question Format Shift the Reason for Difficulty in JEE Advanced Paper 2?

In Paper 1, multiple-choice questions, even those with multiple correct options, allow a candidate to eliminate wrong answers, cross-reference options, and apply reverse logic in tight situations. That option disappears entirely in Paper 2's integer-type and numerical sections. There is no partial credit for being close. A calculation error in the third step of a five-step problem produces the wrong answer just as completely as not attempting it at all.

Paper 2 has more integer-type questions and does not include paragraph or matrix match-type questions in the same way as Paper 1, making it structurally more calculation-dependent. This places a premium on speed, accuracy, and clean working simultaneously, which is a considerably harder combination to sustain over three hours than selective option elimination.

How Timing Works Against JEE Advanced Paper 2?

The scheduling of both papers on the same day is a deliberate design choice and it has a measurable impact on performance. Paper 1 will be conducted from 9 AM to noon and paper 2 begins at 2:30 PM. A candidate walks into paper 2 having already spent three hours in high-intensity problem-solving, with a lunch break in between that is rarely restful given the stakes involved.

Paper 2 was noted to be moderate to tough and lengthy last year and that combination of length and difficulty landing in the afternoon session, after cognitive resources have already been depleted by Paper 1, is not accidental. The exam is designed to test endurance alongside intelligence. Candidates who practise only for content mastery but not for sustained concentration across a full exam day regularly find that their Paper 2 performance dips below their actual ability level.

Subject-Wise JEE Advanced Difficulty Pattern Across Recent Years

The subject that makes Paper 2 particularly punishing varies year to year but Mathematics has been the most consistently demanding section across recent cycles.

In Paper 2 of JEE Advanced 2025, Maths was moderate, but Physics was tough, while Chemistry remained easy to moderate. Last year JEE Advanced paper was notable because it was Physics and not Mathematics that emerged as the most punishing section, driven by questions that blended multiple chapters into single problems rather than testing isolated concepts.

What Does this Mean for Your JEE Advanced Preparation Strategy?

Understanding why Paper 2 is harder should directly shape how you prepare not just what you study

  • Practise Full Mock Tests:Simulating both papers back to back on the same day with a timed break is the only way to genuinely prepare for the fatigue factor that affects afternoon performance

  • Practice Integer-type:Dedicate specific sessions to numerical answer questions where there are no options to fall back on. Clean, step-by-step calculation under time pressure is a separate skill from conceptual understanding

  • Forget About Paper 1 Performance:A difficult Paper 1 can unsettle a candidate heading into the afternoon session. Experienced toppers treat both papers as independent events

  • Improve your Mathematics Speed:Across four of the last five years, Mathematics has been the hardest or most time-consuming section in Paper 2. Improving calculation speed in Calculus, Algebra, and Coordinate Geometry directly improves your Paper 2 score ceiling

  • Focus on Chemistry:In every year from 2021 to 2025, Chemistry has been rated the easiest section in Paper 2. Candidates who build a strong Chemistry base can use it to bank marks and recover time for Physics and Mathematics

Quick Links:

Paper 2 feels harder than Paper 1 because it structurally is, in terms of question format, cognitive demand, and timing. The shift from MCQs to integer-type questions removes the safety net of option elimination. The afternoon slot compounds the challenge with fatigue. And Mathematics, which has been the hardest section in Paper 2 for four of the last five years, leaves very little margin for error. For JEE Advanced 2026 aspirants, the takeaway is your Paper 2 preparation deserves at least as much dedicated attention as Paper 1 and ideally more.
