Most of the candidates often ask about the importance of General knowledge while preparing for Group Discussions. The simple answer is that there is much of a difference between approaching several entrance examinations versus preparing GK topics for GD. The panel can give any random topics to aspirants to check analytical skills and overall understanding of the given topic. Therefore, it is required to brush up on your preparation in General knowledge before appearing for the Group discussion rounds of IIM’s and B-schools.

The Group Discussion topics mainly comprise current affairs, business, and economic-related subjects. Candidates must be aware and prepared for all the societal events that happened in the last year. There may be some topics where candidates can have a little content to deliver, which are referred to as Abstract-type GDs. While appearing in such Group discussions, aspirants are expected to show their creative thoughts, and the use of facts and figures holds great importance.

The academic background of aspirants also plays a crucial role. Mostly Group discussions topics are decided in such a way that it does not favor any particular specialization or stream. However, there might be some topics that can indirectly favor a stream, for instance, management and economics graduates are benefitted as most of the topics, usually revolve around business.

Tips to Handle Surprise Topics in GD

Candidates can find tips to handle the surprise topics during group discussions in MBA colleges or B-schools.

Start the Discussion

Candidates starting off the Group discussions have higher chances of selection. It is a fact that staring in a GD can be a bit risky but if it works, you will surely get brownie points. A student should begin if they have clear facts on the given topic. Otherwise, any wrong information started at the beginning of the discussion can land him/her in trouble. Candidates who start the GD introduce the topic, briefly then ask other members about their views. The process then continues, and if at any point there is any lack of content then, he/she should act smartly and ask other team members to carry it forward.

Pick up Clues from other Team Members

Candidates, if not prepared well, must start a bit slow and give chance to the other member to begin the discussion, and meanwhile, you can acquire inputs from them. The student must be a good listener and should make a note of all the important points that the other candidate is delivering. Most of the times students don't remember facts and figures which ultimately leads the other members to think and state the clear facts in front of the panel. Therefore, aspirants must be diligent and proactive through the discussion.

Be a Group Pacifier

Group discussions are not majorly conducted to check the subject knowledge or test the content of the candidates. It is held to judge candidates on four broad points i.e, Communication, Collaboration, Content, and Clarity. Students might not have sufficient content on the given topic, but if they do well as far as other factors are concerned, it will surely reflect a positive image in front of the panelist. The candidate must know how to lead and collaborate with the team. If in any situation candidates fall short of content, then they should ensure that the further discussion must take place smoothly. Thus, try to be a Group Pacifier in the Group Discussions.

Silence is the Key

If the first three tips don't work, staying silent during GD is considered to be the best policy if you are unaware of the given topic. Staying quiet is good than being considered as a fool right? Students who are not sure about the given topic should remain quiet rather than state wrong facts and figures.

Thus, Students are advised to stay calm and give their best shot during the Group discussion round. Staying positive, confident, and believing in the team spirit will create a good image in the eyes of the panelist.
