In an extraordinary and rare feat, the seventeen-year-old son of a daily wager couple has secured admission to the National Institute of Technology, Delhi (NIT Delhi) after availing free coaching classes under a scheme that was released by the Delhi government. Amarjeet, the boy who achieved this accomplishment with his sheer brilliance and hard work, lives in the cramped quarters of Dharampur with his parents, Kavita and Sohan Lal. He could not afford the private coaching institutes for the engineering entrance exams like JEE Main or JEE Advanced and hence, he had enrolled in the free coaching classes that were run under a scheme by the government of Delhi.

The Chairman of the Delhi Housing Finance Corporation, Rajesh Goyal, has come forward and will be bearing the educational expenses of the boy. Amarjeet was enrolled in the ‘Jai Bheem Mukhyamantri Pratibha Vikas Yojna’, which is a free coaching scheme that was launched by the Delhi government in the year 2017. He was a part of the first batch of students under that scheme and received coaching from Sachdeva New P. T. College. As per the officials, the educational expenses of Amarjeet would come to around Rs. 1 lakh per annum. Amarjeet aspires to join the Indian Administrative Services (IAS), also knows as Civil Services, after completing his degree in Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech).

Some time back, the Social Welfare Minister of Delhi, Rajendra Pal Gautam, has announced that he would fund the education of Shashi, a daily wager’s daughter. Shashi had cleared the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) and then secured admission to the Lady Hardinge Medical College in Delhi. Shashi’s father, Akhilesh Kumar Gaur, is a 47-year-old man who completed his education till class 12th and earns Rs. 400 per day now for plastering walls. On the other hand, Shashi’s mother never received any schooling.

The Chief Minister of Delhi, Mister Arvind Kejriwal, had announced earlier that a resident of the national capital has decided to fund the education of Vijay Kumar, another brilliant student who had secured admission to the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi (IIT Delhi) after he availed the free coaching scheme of the Delhi government.

The aim of the scheme ‘Jai Bhim Mukhyamantri Pratibha Vikas Yojna’ is to ensure that quality and free education is provided by the coaching classes to the economically disadvantaged students for the preparation of various competitive and entrance exams. Initially, only the meritorious Dalit students were considered eligible for the free coaching classes but the government has recently extended the scheme to all economically weak candidates who belong to other backward classes and the general category as well.

Such schemes that promote education among the economically weaker section of society and ensures that even the underprivileged get access to good quality education so that they can fulfil their dreams are a necessary and noble cause that must be encouraged. Many intelligent and hard-working students have benefitted from these schemes in recent years and promoting such ventures will make education a not so distant dream for them.
