Excellent news for anyone seeking a Canada Work Visa! According to the most recent exception given by the Canadian government, holders of Canada Tourist visas can now apply for a work visa for up to two years if they obtain a job offer while visiting the country. According to the IRCC, the exemption is valid until February 28, 2025.

Canada Tourist Visa Holders Can Now Obtain a 2-Year Work Visa

The Canadian government has extended a temporary measure aimed at making work permit applications easier for foreign nationals who are currently visiting Canada. The policy, which was supposed to expire at the end of February 2023, has been extended for an additional two years.

Visitors who have held a work permit within the past 12 months might apply for temporary work authorization to begin working for their new company sooner.

Keeping this temporary policy in place gives firms in Canada another alternative since many are confronting substantial labour shortages during this era of economic boom, according to Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

This procedure differs significantly from the usual process, in which candidates must apply for their initial work permit before arriving in Canada, and if granted while in the country on visitor status, must depart the country to be awarded their work visa.

Who is Eligible to Apply for a Canada Work Visa Under the New Rules?

The following applicants are qualified to apply for the Canada Work Visa, according to IRCC guidelines:

  • Individuals who have valid visitor status in Canada on the day they apply.

  • Applicants with a job offer backed up by a labour market impact assessment (LMIA) or an LMIA-exempt offer of employment.

  • Applicants who have filed an employer-specific work permit application by February 28, 2025.

  • Individuals who fulfil all of the other basic admissibility requirements.

Note: This policy was implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic. The government implemented it on August 24, 2020, at a time when Canada's immigration was declining and companies were experiencing a labour shortage. It has now been extended till February 28, 2025.

Having said that, the extension of the temporary policy is intended to solve the labour shortages experienced by many Canadian firms during a period of economic boom. According to Statistics Canada statistics from December 2022, the number of vacancies fell to 848,000 from over one million earlier in the year.

Despite this, the country has added 326,000 jobs since September, bringing the number of working Canadians to more than 20 million for the first time. Canada's unemployment rate was 5% in January.
