How is JEE Main 2026 Rank Calculated?
The rank for JEE Main is not calculated directly from the raw marks. There are 3 stages that are included in the complete process of the JEE Main rank calculation, including converting raw score to percentile, compiling the final merit list, and then calculating the final AIR. The detailed process of the same can be found below:-
- Stage 1:Conversion of Raw Marks to Percentile
Since the exam is conducted in multiple shifts, the authority converts your raw marks into a percentile score. This score basically determines the number of students in your specific shift who scored equal to or less than you. The formula that is used to calculate raw marks to percentile is:-
Percentile = 100 * Number of candidates in the shift with raw score / Total number of candidates in that shift
- Stage 2:Compiling the Final Merit List
After both exam sessions are conducted, NTA merges the results. If you appeared in both sessions, your highest percentile from either session is used. If you are a unique candidate, then your rank is calculated based on the total number of unique candidates who appeared in at least one of the two sessions.
- Stage 3:Calculating the Final AIR
Your rank is determined by your position in the consolidated percentile list. You can estimate your rank using this general formula:
Estimated Rank = (100 - Your percentile) * Total number of candidates / 100
Tie Breaking Rule: If two or more candidates have the same NTA Percentile Score, the following order is used to determine who gets the higher rank:
- Mathematics Score: Higher percentile in Math.
- Physics Score: Higher percentile in Physics (if Math is tied).
- Chemistry Score: Higher percentile in Chemistry (if both above are tied).
- Error Ratio: A lower ratio of incorrect answers to correct answers across all subjects.
- Subject-wise Error Ratio: Lower ratio of incorrect to correct answers in Math, then Physics, then Chemistry.
