IITs Plan to Increase Intake of Students from 2017-2018 Academic Session

Several IITs of India have proposed to increase the intake of its students to 460 from the next academic session 2017-18. These IITs have sent the proposal to their Senates as well as Joint Entrance Examination Board. At present, the newer IIT's have a total intake strength ranging from 120 - 160 seats per session.

An official said that the final announcement will be made after the Senates give green signal to the proposal. Coordinator of the Joint Seat-Allocation Authority (JoSAA), Y. Udaykumar said that the proposal for enhancing the number of seats indicates that these IITs have been able to improve their infrastructure. Now they can accommodate more students.

At present JoSAA conducts Counselling of the students who clear their JEE Advanced and JEE Main examinations. If the proposal is materialised, the total number of seats for IIT's will reach 11,032 for the academic year 2017-18. Students are admitted to NITs and IITs on the basis of their JEE Advanced examination results.

The old IITs have not appealed for an increase of seats. IIT Tirupati, IIT Goa and IIT Dhaward are functioning from temporary locations at present. They have not appealed to increase the seats.

An official of MHRD on anonymity said that HRD Ministry has given a green signal to close unpopular courses among students. As a result, lots of seats remain vacant in the IITs every year.

MHRD has also sent a directive to these institutes to assess their infrastructure, the strength of faculty, national requirement and employment opportunities.
