Every year, NEET is followed by the release of the answer key on the NTA official website. Once the NEET 2023 answer key is out, NTA gives the examinees a provision to challenge the document. The NEET 2023 merit list is released shortly after the results are announced. Candidates are shortlisted based on the scores and ranks achieved in the NTA NEET exam. Only those students who qualify the NEET cutoff 2023 and make it to the list will be eligible for the counselling process.

What After NEET 2023 – Counselling Process

This section provides an overview of the NEET 2023 counselling, which is likely to commence within a month of the result announcement. Two types of seats are offered to eligible candidates through NEET counselling. These are described below:

AIQ (All India Quota) Counselling

The AIQ (All India Counselling) is conducted by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) on behalf of the MCC (Medical Counselling Committee).

  • Through this counselling process, 15 per cent of the total seats in govt medical and dental colleges of India are filled.

  • All the Deemed and Central universities like AMU (Aligarh Muslim University), AIIMS (All India Institute of Medical Sciences) and BHU (Banaras Hindu University) will be included in the process.

  • Colleges from all states except Jammu and Kashmir will participate in the process as J&K has opted out of it. Here, the counselling will be done under the State Quota scheme only.

  • For application to the AIQ counselling, you will either have to apply through the official website of MCC or DGHS.

State Quota Counselling

Under this counselling, 85 per cent of the seats in state medical and dental colleges are filled.

  • The State Quota counselling is conducted by different authorities in different states.

  • One of the most important criteria for this counselling is that you must be holding the domicile of that particular state.

  • However, some of the private colleges may prove to be a boon to students as they accept students irrespective of their state of residence.

Find out more about the NEET 2023 counselling process of your state in the table below.

Step-by-Step NEET 2023 Counselling Process

The NEET counselling process will be held in three rounds, including a mop-up round. Let’s discuss the steps of the counselling process in detail.

Step 1 – Registration

To commence the NEET 2023 counselling process, candidates will have to complete the registration process. For this, one has to log in to the MCC/State authority portal and enter their personal details to register afresh. Since the counselling will be held online, students will need to fill out the online registration form before moving on to the next step.

Step 2 – Choice Filling & Locking

After successful registration, candidates will have to select the colleges from the list provided and enter the names as per their preference. This is called the choice filling. They can choose as many colleges as they want and change the order as per their wish. However, to lock these choices, candidates will have to pay a certain amount as the counselling fee. Once the choices are locked, students will not have the option of changing or modifying the order or names of colleges.

Step 3 – Seat Allotment

Next, candidates will be allocated seats after each round of counselling as per their performance in the examination and the preferences they entered at the time of choice filling. However, it may not always be that students get their preferred college/course. In such cases, a candidate can reapply for fresh colleges in the next round of counselling.

Step 4 – Enrollment

Finally, candidates get enrolled in one of the NEET 2023 participating colleges as per their performance. The admission is only confirmed after candidates pay the admission fee amount and reserve a seat for themselves.
