MAT 2023 Mathematical Skills: Tips for Preparation, Topics, Good Score

The Mathematical skills section of the MAT 2023 entrance exam is the most challenging section of the exam. This section is the most time-consuming as it mostly depends upon the calculation skills of the candidates. The difficulty level of this section generally ranges from moderate to difficult. MAT PBT will be conducted on May 21, 2023. MAT CBT 1 and MAT CBT 2 2023 exams will be conducted on May 14, 2023 and June 4, 2023. MAT IBT 2023 will be conducted on May 7, 13, 20 and 27, 2023. The Mathematical Skills section of MAT 2023 is generally the favorite section for students who love calculations. Some of the questions may require a lot of calculations while some can be solved quickly using logic. The total time consumed for this section depends upon the problem-solving skills of the candidates along with their grasp of logic.

Candidates are advised to practice solving more questions and they should focus on preparing strategies for solving a particular type of question. Solving questions from the previous year's MAT Question paper may also be helpful to get familiar with the questions that can be asked in the exam. In this article, Collegedekho covers some of the most important topics in the mathematical skills section of the MAT exam.

Here, you will get an idea of the syllabus, marking scheme, topics, and an average or good score in the MAT mathematical skills section.

    MAT 2023 Exam Pattern

The MAT question paper consists of 5 sections containing 200 questions in total. Each section has 40 questions. One mark will be awarded for each correct answer while 0.25 marks will be deducted for every wrong attempt.

The maximum time for the exam is 150 minutes. There is no time limit for any of the sections so the candidates can devote any amount of time to any section. They must prevent themselves from wasting time on more time-consuming questions.

Aspirants should solve mock test papers to get an idea about the total time taken by each of the sections which can be helpful on exam day. Also, the difficulty level of each of the sections is different.

Candidates should attempt to solve the easier ones first so that they can save time for lengthy and complicated questions.

MAT composite scores are calculated based on the candidates’ performance in the first four sections. It does not include the scores of the 5th section. Check the points listed below to understand the calculation of the MAT composite score.

    • The composite score of MAT is on a scale of 199 to 801. A composite score of less than 200 or more than 800 is not very common

    • Sectional scores less than 20 & more than 80 are rare

    • All scores below 200 will be considered 199, and scores above 800 as 801. For example, even if you get less than 199, your composite score will be reported as 199. Similarly, for scores above 801, it will be reported as 801 only.

    MAT Result-cum-Scorecard Important Details 2023

Following are the important details mentioned on the MAT scorecard or score report:

    • MAT section-wise scaled scores in Language Comprehension, Intelligence & Critical Reasoning, Data Analysis & Sufficiency, and Mathematical Skills.

    • MAT 2023 Composite Score.

    • The score of a candidate in the Indian & Global Environment section. The Indian & Global Environment score of a candidate is not used in the calculation of the overall composite score or MAT percentile. This is because according to AIMA, questions asked in this section do not illustrate a candidate's ability to perform in a PGP course.

    • Section-wise and overall percentile of a candidate in the MAT exam.

MAT 2023 Score vs Percentile Calculation

We have provided the calculation method of the scores and percentile of the MAT 2023 exam. Candidates are advised to go through the calculation method to know how the percentile and scores of MAT are calculated.

Calculation of MAT Scaled Scores 2023

The section-wise scores mentioned in the MAT 2023 scorecard are the scaled scores of a candidate. The scaled scores are calculated based on marks obtained by a candidate in each of the MAT 2023 exam sections.

    • Each section of the MAT exam contains 40 questions of 1 mark each. This puts the maximum achievable raw marks in each section of MAT 2023 at 40.

    • The raw scores obtained by a candidate in the MAT 2023 exam are scaled to a range of 0 to 100.

    • Since MAT is conducted 4 times each year and the level of difficulty of each exam can vary, the scaled scores are adjusted to nullify this difference in difficulty levels.

    • Scaled scores give a near-accurate depiction of a candidate's ability and performance in the MAT exam and can be compared to the scores obtained by other candidates.

    • While the scaled score of the Indian & Global Environment section is included in the MAT score report,
