Tamilnadu Agricultural University (Overview)

Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) was founded in 1968 as an agricultural school in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, and afterward transferred to the city of Coimbatore in 1906. TNAU's roots can be traced back to this school. When Madras University was founded in 1920, TNAU became a part of the University. Agriculture education and research were taken over by the TNAU, which assisted the State Agricultural Department by presenting research findings. Coimbatore's Agricultural College and Research Institute was South India's sole agricultural education institution until 1946 when it was decommissioned. Masters and Doctoral degrees have been awarded since 1958 when it was designated as a Post-Graduate Centre. In 1965, the Agricultural College and Research Institute, Madurai, was founded. When the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University was founded in 1971, these two institutions served as the University's foundation.

Students can choose from a wide range of undergraduate, graduate, and doctorate degrees at the institution. Students in their first year are required to have their own computers due to the university's shift to e-learning in 2007. Additionally, the university presently includes research programmes at over 32 locations around Tamil Nadu, employing over 1,200 scientists and educators.

TNAU courses have been developed as a result of worldwide technology advancements. B.Tech (Food Process Engineering) was introduced in the academic year 1998-1999, Agricultural Biotechnology was introduced in the academic year 2002-2003, and Horticulture in the academic year 2003-2004 as self-supporting programmes. The B.Tech (Energy and Environmental Engineering) and B.Tech (Bioinformatics) degree programmes were launched in 2004. Agriculture Information Technology and Agribusiness Management degree programmes were launched in 2007 by the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources.

According to Tamil Nadu's Department of Education, TNAU has been recognised by the UGC.

The affiliation of TNAU with Madras University was made official with a three-year degree programme in 1920. From 1971 until 1946, the only place in South India where students could receive a formal education in agriculture was Coimbatore's Agricultural College and Research Institute.
