Anna University

Anna University, a unitary university, was established on September 4, 1978. Dr. C.N. Annadurai, former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, was the inspiration for the creation of this university. AU courses are offered for higher education in Engineering, Technology, Architecture, and Applied Sciences that is relevant to societal requirements both now and in the future. It facilitates collaboration between academic and industrial communities and fosters research and distribution of knowledge acquired from it. The interested candidates can apply for AU admissions in their chosen course within the stipulated time mentioned by the university.

The university is 3 kilometres from Guindy Railway Station and 10 kilometres from airport in Chennai's southern part. The Anna University campus (main) covers 189 acres and is bordered on the north by the Adyar river and on the south by Raj Bhavan. The Madras Institute of Technology at Chrompet is the university's second campus, with a total area of 52 acres. In Taramani, Chennai, a third campus covers 5 acres. These campuses have a range of buildings that serve the university community's different needs. The AU placement cell operates throughout the year in association with the major recruiters for the better opportunities to the final year degree students.

In the university departments, Anna University offers 29 UG and 90 PG programmes in various disciplines and 41 UG and 57 PG programmes in affiliated institutions. In the university departments, around 16007 students are pursuing their degree programmes, while in affiliated institutions, approximately 7,21,276 students are pursuing their degree programmes. For its proficiency in developing Research & Development activities in the area of Biomedical Engineering and Applications, the University Grants Commission (UGC) designated it as a "University with Potential for Excellence" (UPE) in the XII plan period.

Anna University was ranked 201 in the Faculty of Engineering and Chemicals during the 2017-2018 academic year by QS (Quacquarelli Symonds). In the subject of Mechanical, Aeronautical, and Manufacturing Engineering, Anna University is ranked between 151 and 200 internationally and 7 nationally. It was also re-accredited by NAAC on September 24, 2014, with a CGPA of 3.46 on a four-point scale (the highest among all the State Universities of Tamil Nadu) and an "A" grade valid for five years.

Based on research papers produced by its academic members and research researchers, AU ranks second in India in the 'h' index citations. It is rated below among the many universities/institutions that participated in the NIRF 2017 in India in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) Ranking 2017 by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) New Delhi. AU has bagged 22nd rank in the overall category, 20th rank in the university category, 21st rank in the research category, 49th in the management category, 29th in the architecture category and 17th rank in the engineering category in the annual NIRF rankings of 2022.

Anna University Admissions

The Anna University admission process has started for the academic year 2022-23 and is still going on. Admissions on various levels and courses are taking place for AU.

Admission to the renowned Anna University courses, including B.E/B.Tech, B.Arch, MCA, M.Tech, and MBA are based on TNEA, NATA, TANCET scores, and TNEA counselling. For admission to MBA and MCA courses, the TANCET 2022 exams will be held on May 14, 2022, and the ME/M.Tech/M.Arch/M.Plan exam will be held on May 15, 2022. Registration for TANCET 2022 began on March 30, 2022. The deadline to apply was April 18, 2022. Application forms are accessible on the conducting body's official website at tancet.annauniv.edu.

Through the Anna University UG admissions, it provides full-time BE/B.Tech and B.Arch Programs in a variety of fields. The minimal qualifying criteria for admission are a 10+2 level test or equivalent in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.

For BE/ B.Tech admissions, candidates will be shortlisted based on their 10+2 results, followed by TNEA counselling. For the B.Arch programme, NATA score is required.

At the postgraduate level, Anna University offers ME and M.Tech programmes in a variety of specialisations. The minimal requirement for admission is a BE/ B.Tech degree in the appropriate discipline. Diploma holders, as well as AMIE holders, are eligible to apply. TANCET scores are used to determine admission, which is followed by university-based counselling (TANCA).

Candidates with a valid GATE score are also eligible to apply for MBA programmes. TANCET is not required for such candidates.

Anna University also provides M.Arch, M.Plan, MBA, and MCA (Regular+Lateral) degrees at the postgraduate level. Full-time M.Sc programs are available at the University. The minimum requirement for Anna University PG admission is a bachelor's degree with a minimum of 50% (45% for SC/ST). TANCET-qualified students must attend a university-based counselling session (TANCA) to be considered for Anna University admissions.

Anna University Application Process 2022

The  Anna University application process is completely online. To complete the Anna University application form, candidates need to follow the below-mentioned steps:

  • Visit the official page of Anna University.
  • Go to the "Admissions" tab on the official home page.
  • Instructions for both UG and PG student admissions are provided on this page.
  • The tentative schedule of admissions is also provided at the reach of just one click.
  • The students can choose their choice of level of admission and click on the desired UG or PG option.
  • Clicking on the desired UG or PG course option will redirect the student to a new window where notification, important dates, guidelines, and other important instructions for the students are provided.
  • Candidates are required to upload their photographs as per the specifications given in the guidelines for scanning and uploading photographs. An online application uploaded without a photograph will be rejected.
  • To avoid any difficulty in the admission process, the candidates are advised to keep all the required documents, such as birth certificate, category certificate, last qualifying degree certificate, etc., handy.
  • For completion of the admission process, payment of the correct amount of fees is necessary. 18% GST is applicable on the number of fees.
  • The Anna University admission counselling is always conducted through the online method. Once the rank list has been published, the web portal for exercising the choice of the branch of study will be available.
  • The candidate should use a valid and functional email ID, a valid and functional mobile number for registration. This email ID and mobile number must be maintained active, as all the communications to the candidate will be sent only to the registered email ID and mobile number.
  • After entering all the details, the student is required to choose the save/submit button. The entered details can be viewed. In case anyone wants to make any changes, the applicant can make the changes. After this, the Candidate should click submit and save button. The candidate need not send the printout of the online application or any other documents to the Director (admissions).
  • All the original certificates, including mark sheets and permanent residence certificates will be verified, and hence care should be taken while uploading the scanned copies of the certificates.

Anna University Cutoff

TNEA and TANCET counselling are used to determine admission to Anna University for BTech and MBA programmes, respectively. Anna University cut-offs will be decided based on reservation categories and seat availability. The institution has several courses that accept TNEA and TANCET scores for admission to various programs.

The Directorate of Technical Education (DoTE), Chennai, administers the TNEA written test and counselling for admission to BTech programmes. Registration, fees, choice filling, allotment, and confirmation are all done entirely online during the counselling process. DTE, Chennai produces a TANCET rank list to screen eligible students for admission to the MBA programme. The placement at Anna University is the ultimate thing for which a student strives to get in his or her final year. At Anna University, the Centre for University-Industry Collaboration (CUIC) offers programmes that promote collaboration between academic and industrial components. AU placement training offers core competency development programmes for faculty and students. It also organises campus placements, industry training, tours, and projects in addition to the training.

The Anna University placement campaigns attract more than 200 recruiters from India and overseas. The offers are for employment in IT, ITES, and Core, which encompasses the majority of the candidates. The Tamil Nadu state level placement programme for Anna University-affiliated colleges is also managed by CUIC. It prepares the students to be placed in various institutions and organisations of their choice, from political and social agencies, think tanks, and academic institutions to PSUs, corporate sectors, etc.

There are several Anna University scholarship programmes available for the students. Not only scholarships, but the university also financially supports the students with various fellowship and award programs and gives scholarships on the income basis of the student's family. Anna University scholarship facilities for UG and PG students help the students with financial assistance and reward academic performances. The Anna University scholarship programmes are listed below, with the criteria to be fulfilled by students to be eligible for them.

Anna University manages a variety of scholarships offered by the state and federal governments, adhering to all of the government's rules and regulations.

Central Government Scholarships: As per the Central Government scholarship is concerned, the student applies directly on the "National Scholarship Portal" and submits the hard copy of the application to the scholarship section. The Central Government scholarships are concerned as the various amounts are directly transferred to the student account.

Alumni Scholarships: In addition, scholarships are given through endowments by outside agencies, including private entities, and also batch-wise scholarships by alumni. In general, the alumni scholarship for undergraduate students is awarded year by year, beginning in the first or second year and continuing until the final year, subject to specific restrictions such as maintaining a minimum CGPA in the preceding year.

The selection criteria for awarding all scholarships to students include the following:

  • The scholarship for the first year is based on marks obtained in the qualifying examination.
  • Generally, the student is expected to get only one scholarship
  • A minimum specified CGPA from 2nd year onwards

Anna University Campus Facilities and Infrastructure

Anna University campus includes everything a student needs. Students, university personnel, and faculty members have access to a variety of amenities at Anna University. It is very favorable for learning, with the Adyar River running through the northern parts of the Campus.

The facilities and infrastructure at the Anna University campus are ideal for creating a good, cheerful, and comfortable environment for students. Individual hostels for males and girls are available at the University. The library of the university is well-stocked. The facilities of Anna University guarantee that students have a pleasant experience while on campus. Students at AU have access to both indoor and outdoor sports facilities. Students can also take advantage of a medical centre, contemporary IT infrastructure, and a convenience store at Anna University.

  • Library: Over 1,47,065 volumes are in the library's collection. There are 12,953 books in the Book Bank, 112 current periodicals, 31,000 journals, and 42 magazines and newspapers. E-books (over 5000) and E-journals (over 20,000) are also available in the library. Students can borrow educational CDs from the library.
  • Hostel: Water purifiers, a common area, a leisure room, a mess, a TV, laundry services, security, and a monitoring system are all standard features in hostels. A unique hostel has been built for students admitted under the CIWGC, NRI, and FN categories. Air conditioning, a geyser, a mini-fridge, and a microwave oven are included in every room. A common room has been equipped with washing machines.
  • Sports Complex: The sports complex of Anna University includes facilities like a badminton court, basketball court, cricket ground, a football ground, a swimming pool, a tennis court, a hockey ground, volleyball court, hand ball ground, kabaddi ground, kho-kho ground, and table tennis.
  • Labs: Anna University labs include the civil engineering lab, chemistry lab, computer lab, electrical lab, electronics lab, language lab, mechanical lab, physics lab, research lab, work design lab, automation lab, quality engineering lab, innovation lab, soft skills lab.
  • Cafeteria: The air-conditioned cafeteria facilities provided by the university include chinese, indian, and south indian cuisines. There is another split cafeteria available for coffee and snacks on the AU campus.
  • Gym: The gymnasium is part of the university campus facilities. Students can take care of their health and fitness by making use of this gymnasium facility provided by the university. The gym is well equipped with exercise and training equipment. The gym helps the students to stay fit and healthy.
  • Medical/ Hospital: The health centre at Anna University has been striving to provide comprehensive health care, i.e., preventive, curative, and promotive services to students.
  • Wifi: The university has high-speed wifi connectivity in all laboratories, libraries, hostels, auditoriums and seminar halls, and even guest houses. The AU campus has been using the new standard for next-generation wireless technology for wifi networks so that the teachers, students, and support staff can easily access the data, voice, multimedia, and video conferencing services as well as research, e-learning, and business applications.
  • Convenience stores: The Anna University campus has a few departmental stores to facilitate students' daily shopping.
  • Auditorium:Anna University auditoriums are used for academic talks, conferences, seminars, slide and film shows, demonstrations, lectures, workshops, etc.

Anna University Awards, Recognition, Accreditations, And Collaborations

  • UGC has recognised Crystal Growth Centre, Anna University, as a National Facility.
  • The Government of India has recognised the Institute of Remote Sensing (IRS) for regular coastal zone mapping. It is also the first state Centre to establish GIS.
  • The Ministry of Environment has established the National Centre for Sustainable Coastal Management (NCSCM), Forest and Climate Change with a grant of Rs 200 crores at Anna University to promote sustainable coasts through increased partnerships, conservation practices, scientific research, and knowledge management for the benefit of current and future generations.
  • National Hub for Healthcare Instrumentation Development (NHIID), a national facility, was established with initial funding of Rs12.4 crores for DST to promote the development of indigenous products, calibration standards, platform technologies, and human resources development in the healthcare area of the country.
  • AU library has been ranked 7th in e-resources usage all over India and stands in the 1 st position in Tamil Nadu. We currently have more than one lakh sixty thousand books with 500 print journals (more than 12000 e-journals).
  • Centre for University-Industry Collaboration (CUIC) received Sustainable Institute Industry Partnership (SEED) award for two consecutive years for the achievements in the areas of industry academia.

Anna University Awards

  • EMRC, Anna Community Radio consecutively won the first prize for the second time in the National level community radio competition organized by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, New Delhi, 2015.
  • Anna Community Radio got the national award for good practices under the thematic category in 2010-11. The prize was presented for a series on Science for Women's Health and Nutrition.
  • Science projects for women such as 'Sakthi Arivayadi' (women, know your power) and 'NalamPeruvaiThozhi' (get well, fellow women) were funded by the Department of Science and Technology (each project funded for about Rs. 16,00,000), Government of India, and broadcast by Anna Community Radio, which involved the communities for programming, study, and production.
  • Ramachandran, Professor Emeritus Centre for Climate Change and Disaster Management, Anna University, received the J C Bose Lifetime Achievement Award from Bharathiar University, Coimbatore, in collaboration with the Indian Science Monitor.
  • On Wednesday, December 29, 2021 (Wednesday), the NSS CELL, Anna University, held a university-level award celebration at Anna University, Chennai. Dr. L. Thulasimani, Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, received the Best NSS Programme Officer Award; Mr. P. Boobalan, IV-Year B.E-Mech(SW), received the Best NSS Volunteer Award; Ms. S.M. Priadharsini, IV-Year B.E-EEE, received the Best NSS Volunteer Award; and the National Service Scheme of PSG College of Technology received the Best NSS Unit Award.
  • Dr. R. Radha Perumal, Anna University, Chennai, jointly won an award in Physical Sciences in the year 2014.

Anna University Recognitions

  • Anna University has been awarded Rs 20 crores under the Tamil Nadu Innovation Initiative Scheme for the design and development of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) to be used during natural disasters and to monitor security threats and dangers.
  • The AU Library is ranked 7th in India for e-resources utilization and first in Tamil Nadu. We presently have about a million sixty thousand books and 500 print periodicals (more than 12000 e-journals).
  • A national facility, the National Hub for Healthcare Instrumentation Development (NHIID), was established with initial funding of Rs.12.4 crores for DST to promote the development of indigenous products, calibration standards, form technologies, and human resource development in the healthcare sector for the country.
