University of Mysore Overview

Established by an act of Parliament in 1966, the University of Mysore, commonly known as UOM, is the foremost University in India and a highly regarded center for teaching and research. The University of Mysore is a public state university in Karnataka, India. Founded on July 27, 1916, it is the first University in India to be started as a modern central university and the second to be established within the State of Karnataka. The University was founded during the reign of Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV, the Maharaja of Mysore. University Grants Commission recognizes the University for offering higher studies degree courses on-campus as well as online.

The University has three campuses: the UOM Mysore, Tubinakere near Mandya, Hemagangotri near Hassan, and Chamarajanagara. The Tubinakere campus near Mandya is known as Sir M. Visvesvaraya Postgraduate Centre and is located on the Mysore-Bangalore highway at a distance of about 8 km from Mandya. The Postgraduate Centre at Hemagangotri, Hassan, is located near Kenchattahalli village on the Mangalore- Bangalore highway at a distance of about 10 km. from Hassan. Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Post-Graduate Centre of Mysore University is located at Chamarajanagar, the Southern-most district Headquarters of Karnataka State. With a teacher-student ratio of 1:25, the University offers excellence in its academic courses. 

UOM offers more than 150 programs in 10 streams at UG, PG, and Doctoral levels. University of Mysore Fee Structure and List of Courses

University of Mysore (UOM), Mysore courses include 200+ courses across 10 streams at the UG, PG, M.Phil, and PhD levels. These courses offered are in the field of Engineering and Architecture, Art, Humanities and Social Sciences, Sciences, Law, Education, Commerce, Computer Application and IT, Management and Business Administration, Medical and Allied Sciences and Media, Mass Communication, and Journalism. National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) has accredited the University of Mysore by awarding it an 'A' grade on November 4, 2017. The UOM CET is held in March every year for admissions to undergraduate programs (UG or PG), including distance learning (DyL) and multi-media technologies. 

The University of Mysore accepts online applications from all other Universities around the world. The online application form can be filled up from the website. The University of Mysore does not conduct any entrance tests for foreign national students. Foreign national students must have at least an 'O' level certificate from an examination board recognized by the University Grants Commission. University of Mysore (UOM) offers a wide range of courses, including undergraduate, Post-graduate, and PhD. degrees as well as Master's programs, Doctoral programs, and Courses - Certificate or Diploma Programs. The UOM admission is based on the merit list which is prepared based on the score obtained in UOM CET. Candidates can apply through online mode only.

University of Mysore Admission Dates 2022

University of Mysore admission 2022 is open now for UG courses. Candidates seeking UOM UG courses admission must appear for the CUET (Common University Entrance Test) conducted by NTA. 

  • They can apply for CUET 2022 by May 6, 2022. 

Admission to UOM UG courses such as BA, B.Sc, and Certificate of Proficiency (COP) course is purely merit-based on the CUET performance. In contrast, the admission to PG courses at UOM is based on the candidate's performance in UOM CET (University of Mysore Entrance Examination) and viva voce. The application form for UOM PG admission will commence in the first week of May. Registrations for admission to the MBA program at the University closed on March 10, 2022.

University of Mysore Application Process 2022 

University of Mysore application process generally starts in March every year with the release of the application form for the MBA program. The selection criteria for different courses are different in the University and for different courses. The application process for the University of Mysore is completely online. To complete the UOM application form, candidates need to follow the below-mentioned steps:

  • Visit the official admission portal of the University of Mysore 
  • Select the program and fill the registration form with the required information, such as educational details, personal details, and contact address.
  • Scanned signatures and color photographs of the candidate must be uploaded along with the UOM application form. To avoid any difficulty in the admission process, the candidates are advised to keep all the required documents, such as birth certificate, category certificate, last qualifying degree certificate, etc., handy.
  • Finally, submit the application form. And pay the UOM application fee via any online payment method such as net banking, credit and debit cards, BHIM UPI, Paytm, etc. Candidates are advised to keep the receipt of the fee paid as proof for further reference. If Confirmation Page is not generated after completing the fee payment, then the transaction is canceled, and the deducted amount is refunded to the candidate's account. Then candidates have to make transactions again. 
  • Eligible candidates will be invited for the entrance exam (Except for MBA). MBA aspirants have to fill their CAT score in the UOM application form 2022, and upon shortlisting, they will be directly called for group discussion and personal interview. Admission is granted on the basis of the candidate's performance in all the selection rounds.
  • UOM CET is a computer-based test, which is mandatory to qualify to be eligible for admission. Upon qualifying for the examination, Candidates are invited for viva voce by the UOM admission committee (the admission committee is different for different courses). The selection of candidates for UOM admission is made based on their overall performance in the last qualifying examination, UOM CET marks, and Viva-voce marks.
  • Ph.D. aspirants are exempted from UOM CET only if they have qualified for national-level entrance examinations such as UGC/CSIR NET (JRF) examination, SET, GATE (with a valid score), or Teacher Research Fellowship.
  • For admission to Degree of Proficiency in Bhasha Mongolian, Indonesia, and Hebrew, the selection for admission is done on a merit basis as per the Certificate of Proficiency (CoP) performance in respective languages. Merit lists are prepared for each category, i.e., candidates belonging to categories such as SC, ST, OBC, PWD, and EWS are eligible for marks concession as per the approved admission Policy of the University of Mysore.
  • If a candidate has fulfilled the eligibility criteria and the procedure prescribed under the University of Mysore Admission and Fee Regulations is followed, then only then he/she will be eligible for UOM admission for that course.
  • Candidates are advised to keep their original UOM application form with them throughout the admission process. The UOM application form should not be submitted again, or any correction/changes in it will render it invalid as per UOM rules. No additional documents will be called after submitting one or multiple applications, including additional documents such as photocopies of certificates, etc. These kinds of additional documents are irrelevant for admission. Moreover, these additional documents will be rejected by the University.
  • Candidates are advised to review their application form thoroughly before submission, as the University of Mysore will not accept changes/ corrections. 
  • After successfully submitting their application form, candidates must take a printout of the confirmation page for future reference. The response for admission will be emailed to the candidate's registered email ID during this process.
  • To apply for admission to Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) courses, candidates are required to appear for UOM entrance exam and viva voce. There is no separate application/admission procedure for B.Tech aspirants at UOM other than CUET.

University of Mysore Scholarships

There are several scholarship programs at the University of Mysore for its students. Not only scholarships, but the University also financially supports the students with various fellowship and award programs. UOM scholarship facilities for UG and PG students help the students with financial assistance and reward academic performances. The UOM scholarship programs are listed below, with the criteria to be fulfilled by students to be eligible for them.

Types of Scholarship:

1) Merit-cum-Means Scholarship: Merit-cum-Means scholarship is available for meritorious students whose family's gross income does not exceed Rs 2,50,000/- per annum.  

2) Merit-cum-Capitation Scholarship: Merit-cum-Capitation scholarship is available for meritorious students whose family's gross income does not exceed Rs 2,50,000/- per annum. 

3) Recognized Merit Scholarship: Recognized Merit Scholarship is awarded to meritorious students of higher secondary or equivalent qualification. The University recognizes a student as 'recognized merit' once the student has acquired a minimum CGPA (CGPA & CGPA in the previous year). 

4) Financial Aid in the form of Hostel Fee and Book Allowance: For students whose family's income does not exceed Rs 1,50,000 per annum. 

5) Scholarships by Government/State/Central organizations to meritorious students studying in higher education institutions. 

6) Scholarship of professional colleges affiliated with the University of Mysore 

7) Scholarship to meritorious students by the UOM Student Welfare Department 

Following award, programs are offered to students to provide financial assistance. The eligibility is based on extraordinary academic performance in a specialized field. These awards are named after the University of Mysore professors who worked and guided the students in that particular discipline.

University of Mysore Campus Facilities & Infrastructure

The 739-acre campus of the University of Mysore has everything a student will need for their overall development. The University believes in providing the students with the best environment for learning and the most advanced infrastructure for professional growth. The UOM campus houses more than 20 schools and special centers, classrooms complexes, student, faculty, and residential staff quarters, a healthcare center that is operational 24 hours, and an administration block. In addition, the campus is well equipped with a sports ground for indoor and outdoor games, a gym, ATM, library, mess, and shopping facilities.

  • Hostel – UOM hostel is spacious and well-furnished, with the availability of a large dining hall. With a total of seventeen hostels provided with recreational facilities such as TVs, health clubs, indoor games, and PCOs, each hostel has its live-in wardens and a faculty member who administers the accommodation. It is to be noted that admission to UOM doesn't ensure guaranteed hostel accommodation due to the limited capacity of the hostels. UOM offers accommodation to the applicants based on different factors. For example, there is a separate hostel for married students. 2 hostels are available for both girls and boys.
  • Gym - Gymnasium is part of University of Mysore facilities. Students can take care of their health and fitness by making use of this gymnasium facility provided by the University. The gym is well equipped with exercise and training equipment. The gym helps the students to stay fit and healthy.
  • Sports - The UOM campus has outdoor and indoor games facilities for students' recreation, including basketball, badminton, tennis courts, cricket, and football grounds. The campus sports ground also has a running track. University also promotes sports like weight-lifting, taekwondo, trekking, and mountaineering. 
  • Cafeteria – The air-conditioned cafeteria facilities provided by the University include Chinese, Indian, and south Indian cuisines. There is another split cafeteria available for coffee and snacks on the campus. 
  • Auditorium – UOM Convention Centre has two auditoriums, three Lecture Halls, one Committee Hall, one Committee Room, and one Training Room. These all are used for academic talks, conferences, seminars, slide and film shows, demonstrations, lectures, workshops, etc.
  • Medical/ Hospital - The Health Centre at the University of Mysore, right from its inception, has been striving to provide comprehensive health care, i.e., preventive, curative, and promotive services to students only. However, for University staff, there is also a CGHS dispensary on the campus.
  • Wifi – The University has high-speed wifi connectivity in all laboratories, libraries, hostels, auditoriums and seminar halls, and even guest houses. The campus has been using the new standard for next-generation wireless technology for wifi networks so that the teachers, students, and support staff can easily access the data, voice, multi-media, video conferencing services, and research e-learning, and business applications.
  • IT Infrastructure – UOM has set up facilities for in-house use of E-mail, Computers, and internet services for all students, project staff, and faculty members. This unit of the University offers a variety of E-services to the students in the context of literature search, computation, and graphics.
  • Laboratories – UOM laboratories are air-conditioned and equipped with various modern instrumental facilities inside them related to all the fields. They are sophisticated but well-equipped, where more than 40 students can perform their experiments simultaneously. The instruments available in the laboratory include UV spectrophotometer: Double beam OD measurement, Magnetic stirrer, Multi-parameter: 6 parameters, namely pH, TDS, ORP, Salinity, Temp, millivolt, Hot air oven, and Digital oven, Rotary flask shaker, UV transilluminator, Dual Orbitex shaker with compressor and many more.
  • Convenience stores – The UOM campus has a few departmental stores to facilitate students' daily shopping.
  • Alumni Associations – University of Mysore is proud to have a collective of more than 80,000 alumni. They have been working as social scientists, scientists, literary critics, civil servants, media experts, journalists, foreign language experts, political leaders, technologists, social activists, entrepreneurs, and managers over the last 35 years and more. 
  • Parking Facility - The University has a parking facility for students and staff.
  • Guest Room – UOM campus has guest houses. All of these are dedicated to accommodating official and unofficial guests of UOM Workshops, Seminars, Symposia, Conferences, Training Programs, Organized by the University, its Centers or Departments, or the others sponsored by the UGC.
  • Banks Facilities – University of Mysore's banking facilities include an SBI branch and its ATMs.
  • Library – University of Mysore has as many libraries as there are schools and centers in the University with a broad collection of books on specialized areas.

  • TEACHING AND LEARNING: There are seven schools in the University, with various departments offering 42 undergraduate, 16 master's, and nine doctoral programs. University of Mysore's School of Physical Sciences is one of India's best physical science departments. In addition to its research activities on traditional areas of Physics, Materials Science and Chemistry, it has also been successful in attracting researchers from other disciplines such as Biology, Medicine and Computer Science to work together in areas where the application is not obvious. The University has a number of laboratories that are well-equipped and fully air-conditioned. These facilities are freely available for use by Post-Graduate students both for experimental and theoretical work.
  • SOCIAL AND CULTURAL: The University has a number of centers and institutes to promote the welfare of the students and the community. It encourages study-abroad and joint research with foreign countries.
  • CONVENIENT LOCATION: UOM is one of the few clustering campuses in India offering quality education at affordable prices. It is located on a lush green campus with almost 739 acres of land, which includes pine forests, main roads, parking facilities, etc. The University has undergone massive development in recent years, with about 2-3 new buildings every year for many decades ahead. In addition to this, it has finished a new theatre building that can hold about 1,100 people.
  • STUDENT GRIEVANCE CELL: The University has a student grievance cell that is dedicated to resolving any issues pertaining to campuses or premises of the University and its various departments. This cell is monitored by the Security Department of the University of Mysore, which deals with any cell problems. The security staff has been trained in handling situations that may arise along with proper communication, so students get redressal within a very short time without much inconvenience. The student grievance cell works on the lines of central/state government complaints redressal agencies with a direct link with Central Government, State Governments, UGC, IITs and IIMs.
  • INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS CORNER: The University of Mysore has an international students corner for the convenience of international students. It consists of a guest house, a library, and a cafeteria. The library is equipped with state-of-the-art reading material on various subjects. It has computers which the students can use to access the internet and other services offered by the library. Students can also use computers in the lobby area of the International Students Corner (ISC) to simply surf or log into their emails. ISC also offers banking services, including ATM services, to students who may need them.
  • HEALTH CENTRE: The University has a Health Center for the students. The facilities available in this center are first class, with 24-hour availability. Students can consult doctors for any ailment and be provided with the very best care available in the city and critical care when required.
  • NURSING CENTRE: A nursing center is available for students who are particularly weak in their studies and need to be nursed so that they can complete their degrees successfully. This facility attends to women students only.
  • SAFETY AND SECURITY: As stated earlier, UOM campus has a strong security system that ensures all its residents' complete safety. The security staff are on their toes all day, every day, to ensure that they can respond to any situation that arises and keep the campus safe and secure. 
  • DRUSTI LAB FOR VISUALLY CHALLENGED: On the UOM campus, there is a center for visually challenged students called the Drusti Lab. This is an initiative of the Department of Computer Science & Engineering where professors and staff members train two visually challenged students to learn how to use computers, synthesizers, and other electronic gadgets that are currently being used in the University. Once they have been thoroughly trained on how to work with these tools, it has been found that there are a few things that they can actually do better than someone who is normally sighted.

University of Mysore Accreditations 

Ranked number one in India, the University of Mysore has a score of: 

  • 3.67 (on a scale of 4) by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC).
  • The UOM is accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with A++ Grade.
  • The University of Mysore was the first University in the State that was accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) in the year 2000 with Five Stars Status.
  • Second cycle of re-accreditation by NAAC in 2006 with A+ Level
  • Recognized by Govt. of India as an "Institution of Excellence (IOE)" with a grant of Rs. 100 crores (in 2008)
  • (Recognized as University with Potential for Excellence (UPE) in 2009 by UGC with a grant of 50 crores in (2012)
  • Recognized Centre of Excellence in Potential for Excellence in a Particular Area (CPEPA) and was awarded a grant of Rs. 9.5 crores which is being renewed in 2016
  • Identified as one of the top 20 universities in Scientific publications and was awarded Rs 9.00 Crore under PURSE Scheme, and renewed for 2nd Phase in 2016 awarded Rs 8.5 crores. 
  • Identified by Government of Karnataka (2009) as Innovation University
  • The overall h-index (Web of Science) for published research: 42 with 3609 publications since 1986. Some faculty members of the University have an h-index of 18 and above.
