This was a revolutionary step, because in those days government Institutions and Christian missionaries were the only agencies involved in educating masses. Private enterprise in education was often discouraged. At that time there was no education to generate leadership, for industrial regeneration of India , or for defense of the motherland. It was with the idea of filling these voids that the DES came in to existence. In the view of establishers, education was the means of rousing the ?intellect, the drooping will and the slumbering conscience of their countrymen. They began with the modest aim of facilitating education at low cost by starting schools and colleges. One of the main goals of the DES was to provide education to wider sections of society by making it affordable. With the march of time, the DES opened more schools and colleges. The technical institutewas started in 1937in Pune. The first college in commerce i.e. BMCC was started in 1943. Bombay College was started in 1954, later named as Kirti M. Doongursee College in Mumbai. DES entered the field of management education and research by starting IMDR in 1974. The guiding principle of DES's administration is Central Direction and Local Autonomy and it is on this basis that; its institutions have progressed over the last 100 years.
