The year 1947 witnessed the dawn of a new age in medical education in Rajasthan as the 15th medical education center in India, the well-known Sawai Man Singh Medical College, began its journey. The college began in the southern wing of SMS Hospital and the Jaipur Medical Association building. Dr. G.N. Sen was its inaugural Principal. He remained in office for a short time and was replaced by Dr. S.C. Mehta, who was well known for his excellent zeal, energy and sense of discipline. Dr. S.K. Menon became Principal of the college in 1951. In 1952, the Medical Council of India recognized the college, and a new OPD block foundation stone was laid the next year. 1952 saw the initiation of P.G courses and the first batch of students for M.D. and M.S. qualified in 1955.
SMS Medical College, blessed with one of the largest OPD's in India, is affiliated with a number of hospitals such as the Sawai Man Singh Hospital in Jaipur. The college now offers various undergraduate, postgraduate, and super-specialty medical courses like MBBS, BDS, MD, M.Ch, etc.
