Women's Junior College - WJC Paralakhemundi - WJC

In the tribal district of Gajapati, the Women's College of Paralakhemundi is the only college that imparts education not only to the women of Gajapati district but to the women of the adjacent area of the neighbouring Andhra Pradesh and Gunupur sub-division of Rayagada district also. This institution was established in August 1983 with the colossal endeavour and immense interest of the present local M.L.A. Sri Trinath Sahu and some other noble persons of Paralakhemundi. In the same year, 34 students only took admission in Intermediate Arts faculty, but in the successive year +2 course was introduced in the college. It obtained I.A. affiliation from the Berhampur University in 1983 but +2 affiliation and Government concurrence was obtained in 1986. From 1985, the students got admitted into traditional B.A. course and +3 degree course after the deposit of requisite fees to the Berhampur University. As ill-luck would have it, the institution miserably failed to obtain +3 affiliation and concurrence till 1997- 98. As a result, the students appeared the examination as noncollegiate candidates at S.K.C.G. College centre. Despite all these massive hurdles there was good result both in Pass and Honours course of the students. However, in 1997-98 the Government and Berhampur University accorded concurrence and affiliation to +3 B.A. course with 64 seats. Since 1988, this institution has come under the scheme of Government grant-in-aid and it became a full-aided college in 1992 with 22 staff (both teaching and Nonteaching). Still, some teaching and non-teaching staff are under the management post. No doubt, the college enjoys the majestic position of being the single women's college in the entire tribal dominated Gajapati District. Sri Trinath Sahu, the then Secretary and the dynamic M.L.A. of the area has taken vital role for its upliftment. Moreover, the college remains highly indebted to Sri Kalinga Panda, the erstwhile advisor Sri Sarat Patnaik, the joint Secretary. However, the college has not yet achieved its goal and its achievement is absolutely inadequate to transform the dream college to reality.
