Campus at a Glimpse

IIT Dharwad was formally inaugurated on August 28, 2016, after its establishment in July of the same year. The Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, set up the institute under the mentorship of IIT Bombay. Initially, IIT Dharwad functioned from a temporary campus located in the Belur Industrial Area, on the outskirts of Dharwad city. This 135-acre campus was previously the Water and Land Management Institute (WALMI).

Today, IIT Dharwad operates from a sprawling 470-acre permanent campus in Mummigatti, Dharwad. The institute offers a variety of courses across five degrees, including B.Tech, BS-MS, M.Tech, MS, and PhD. As per NIRF Ranking 2023, IIT Dharwad is ranked 93rd among the top engineering colleges in India, a testament to its commitment to academic excellence.

The current campus, nestled within the former WALMI campus, is conveniently located on the National Highway (NH-4) that connects Mumbai and Bengaluru. Regular transport services make the campus easily accessible from any point in Dharwad, with all major facilities within a 10 km radius. The campus is less than 30 km away from Hubli, the second-largest city in Karnataka. The infrastructure provided by WALMI includes student hostels, classrooms, and laboratories, ensuring a conducive learning environment for students. Every coin has two sides, apart from this good picture there are specific areas of concern that the institute is responsible. The infrastructural amenities of the institute are not adequate leading students to consistently raise this issue. But the voices seem to be unheard and according to media sources in December 2023, multiple students boycotted classes dues to lack of basic infrastructural facilities and demanded for change to the management. Students have also compalined against the management for the norm of 85% attendace for appearing in the exam.

IIT Dharwad NIRF Ranking: In the Race!

Our Take:
Despite being a relatively new institution, IIT Dharwad's NIRF Ranking of 93 in the engineering category for 2023 is commendable. This reflects the institute's commitment to providing quality education and its potential for future growth.

IIT Dharwad Infrastructure

Classrooms: As per student reviews, the classrooms are spacious and equipped with modern amenities, facilitating effective teaching. They have also seen improvements compared to the previous year.

Auditorium: The auditoriums host a variety of events and activities. However, some students have suggested improvements in seating arrangements and ventilation.

Library: The library is well-stocked with a wide range of books, catering to various academic needs.

Wi-Fi: The campus provides high-speed Wi-Fi or LAN. However, some students have reported occasional Wi-Fi issues and slow cell phone signals.

Hostels: The hostels of IIT Dharwad are well-maintained and visually appealing. The first-year students have a different hostel than the second and third-year students. For first-year students, three students share a room with an attached toilet. For the second and third-year students, a residential flat with five rooms in total accommodates six students. All hostels are equipped with Wi-Fi, offering an average speed of 4-5 Mbps. The facilities provided in the hostels are not satisfactory according to the reviews shared by the students.

Our Take:
Based on student reviews, IIT Dharwad offers a range of facilities but they are not up to the mark and needs enhancement. The classroom facilities  are satisfactory and the library is well-stocked. The auditorium, while used for a variety of events, could improve the seating and ventilation. Wi-Fi connectivity faces occasional issues. The hostel facilities are fine, providing a comfortable living environment, but accommodation arrangements vary between the years. With our interaction with the students they said that they had boycotted classes dues to lack of basic facilties and said that they are living a 'cattle's life'. Well this is an alarming situation and the institute must take quick action to solve this problem

IIT Dharwad Internships & Placements

Internships

IIT Dharwad internships provide valuable industry exposure and practical experience. The institute has a dedicated Career Development Cell (CDC) that actively works towards securing internships and placements for students. As per student reviews, nearly 70% of B.Tech. in Computer Science and Engineering students secure internships or full-time opportunities in companies like Air India, with the top role offered being that of a software developer. Furthermore, about 43% of B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering students secure internships in top notch companies. These internships play a crucial role in enhancing the students' professional skills and employability.

Placements 

IIT Dharwad placements have shown impressive results, according to the NIRF Report 2022. In the four-year undergraduate course, 91 out of 114 eligible students secured jobs, reflecting a high placement success rate. These students got an average salary of INR 14.13 LPA, showing the high-quality job opportunities at the institute. For the two-year postgraduate programme, 3 out of 5 eligible students were placed, with a median salary of INR 14 LPA. These numbers highlight IIT Dharwad's dedication to providing its students with promising career opportunities through effective placement initiatives.

IIT Dharwad placement statistics, as per the NIRF report 2022, highlight the institute's dedication to its students' career growth. With a significant number of students securing jobs and getting decent salary packages, it's evident that IIT Dharwad offers good career opportunities for its students.

IIT Dharwad Diversity & Representation 

IIT Dharwad showcases a diverse representation of students from various geographical backgrounds and genders. As per the NIRF report, the institute accommodates 72 students from the home state and 629 from outside the state in its 4-year undergraduate programme. The 2-year postgraduate programme includes 8 students from the home state and 30 from outside. In terms of gender diversity, IIT Dharwad consists of only 10% of females. The undergraduate programme comprises 569 male and 132 female students, while the postgraduate programme has 33 male and 5 female students. The overall male to female ratio at IIT Dharwad, considering both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, is approximately 6:1. This reflects a male-dominated environment, a trend often seen in other engineering institutions as well.

While IIT Dharwad exhibits a commendable diversity of students, the gender ratio reflects a significant skew towards male students. It's crucial for IIT Dharwad to continue to encourage more female students to pursue engineering, thereby achieving a more balanced gender representation.

The teachers at IIT Dharwad are well-regarded by the students. Based on student feedback, the professors are not only skilled in their field, but they are also approachable and friendly. They are praised for providing high-quality technical knowledge to the students. The professors are also praised for their helpfulness, particularly in their own courses. So it's very clear that IIT Dharwad is proud of its faculty team, who are experienced, well-informed, and considered leaders in their fields. Their commitment to teaching and guiding students significantly contributes to the positive learning atmosphere at IIT Dharwad.

Our Take:
If we talk about the faculty, IIT Dharwad has passed with flying colours. The institute has friendly, highly qualified and helpful professors. Their guidance and mentoring are not limited to four walls of classrooms. 

IIT Dharwad Location

Indian Institute of Technology Dharwad is strategically located in the city of Dharwad, Karnataka. The institute is well-connected to various modes of transport, making it easily accessible. The nearest airport is Hubbali Airport, which is situated approximately 30 km away from IIT Dharwad The closest railway station is Hubli Junction, which is about 35 kilometres away, and it takes nearly 50 minutes to reach the institute from there. Additionally, students can also take a bus from Hubli Bus Stand to reach IIT Dharwad. The convenient location and easy accessibility make the commute very convenient for students across the country.
