Centre for Multi-disciplinary Development Research (CMDR) is an autonomous social science research institute recognised and financially supported by the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR), Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India as well as Government of Karnataka. The Centre for Multi-disciplinary Development Research (CMDR) has been functioning since 1976 at Dharwad as an autonomous not for profit research organisation. It has been registered in 1980 under the Society’s Registration Act. The aims and objectives of the Centre include, among others, conducting research on issues of socio-economic development, and decentralised planning at the sub-regional, regional and national levels in a multi-disciplinary framework, covering economic, social, political and cultural dimensions of human behaviour There is also an attempt to combine judiciously the conceptual and empirical perceptions in its research studies. The Centre has aims to examine the relevance of the received theories in social sciences which have alien origins and form new theories and conceptual frames of greater relevance to Indian conditions.Setting up of CMDR was inspired by the advice of a band of dedicated and eminent social scientists. Being located in Dharwad, which combines both urban and semi-rural features, the Centre has the unique advantage of providing a suitable environment for the analysis of the socio-economic problems of the rural people and regional economy at the grass root level. Hitherto, there has been an unusual concentration of research institutions in urban and metropolitan areas in the country. Further, there is no adequate effort made to induct multi-disciplinary approach in the analysis of the socio-economic problems of the people.

In collaboration with different agencies, the institute had taken up various studies and associated with various programmes. To bring the major research findings to pubic domain, the Centre used to publish the entire project report and a part of it in the form of Monograph. To mention a few institutes who have joined hands with the center include Karnataka Historical Research Society (Dharwad), Birla Institute for Social Science Research (Calcutta), Fiscal Research Foundation (New Delhi), Indian Institute of Management (Ahmedabad), National Institute of Educational Planning and Administration (New Delhi), Indian Economic Association Trust, University of Baroda, Sambalpur University, Utkal University, Foundation for Research in Health Systems (FRHS), (Bangalore), Foundation for Research in Community Health (FRCH), Mumbai/Pune, Osmania University, World Bank, R. W. Centre for Indological Research (Pune), Bombay University, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research(TIFR), etc. The international agencies which have sponsored studies at CMDR are UNESCO, Research in Tobacco Control(RITC), World Bank, ECAFE, ESCAP, UNICEF, Ford Foundation, International Development Research Centre (Canada ), Asian Network for Training and Research Institutions in Educational Planning (ANTRIEP), UNDP, WHO, South-Asian Network for Development and Environmental Economics (SANDEE), Kathmandu, Nepal and Department for International Development(DFID).

Centre for Multi-disciplinary Development Research (CMDR) provides placement assistance to all its students. The dedicated placement cell regularly conducts grooming sessions of the students in areas like soft skills, interview facing skills, behavioral skills hereby making them industry-fit. In the recent years the college has witnessed some well known recruitment companies walking-in and being invited for campus placements.
The Centre's computer facilities are being increasingly used by the faculty, its administrative staff as well as social scientists and students from elsewhere. These facilities also help the researchers visiting the institute for various training programmes, computer application in research methodology course etc. The Data Processing unit of the institute provides data processing facility as well as help in statistical methods to research scholars.An air conditioned seminar hall with multimedia equipments - LCD Projector, public address systems and with a sitting capacity of 60 chairs is available for academic activities of the Institute. Requests for the use of seminar hall should be forwarded to the Director, CMDR through heads of the institutions.CMDR library is one of the leading social science research libraries in north Karnataka with a large collection of books, journals, thesis, reports, CDs, working papers and occasional papers of other social science institutes.
