Joypur Panchanan Roy College - JPRC

The College was established in 1986 as a part of the scheme of the West Bengal Government to spread Higher Education in the rural areas of West Bengal. The area around Joypur in the 1980s had five Higher Secondary schools which completed more than hundred years of existence and the students passing out of them had little opportunity to pursue Higher Education. With the spreading of education, more Higher Secondary schools came up and the public demand for a degree college gathered momentum but communication was a problem as there was no bus route then. People had to ferry across the Damodar by boat and the transport was primitive. But after the bridge across the river which is known as Bharat Chandra Setu, was constructed in 1984 the communication system improved and Joypur was connected to Howrah by motorable road and the Govt. of West Bengal fulfilled the long standing demand of the local people. The foundation stone of Joypur Panchanan Roy College was laid on 7th September,1986 by Mr. Nirmal Bose, the then Honourable Minister of Higher Education, Govt. of West Bengal. The College is named after Sri Panchanan Roy, the late father of the famous industrialist Sri Susanta Kumar Roy who is the founder-donor of the College. He has donated the land of 4 acres, borne the initial costs including the deposit money of Rs. 1,50,000/-which has to be kept reserved as security as per the statutes of the university of Calcutta. Recently Sri Susanta Kumar Roy has constructed the gate of the College and has erected the bust of his revered father.
