Majuli College - MC

Established on September 17, 1962 with a sacred mission of illuminating the river-island and removing the darkness of ignorance, Majuli College is the premier institution of higher education situated at Kamalabari in Majuli sub-division under Jorhat District of Assam. What necessitated the college to be founded at Kamalabari was the geographical isolation and educated back-wardness of most populous river-island of the World Connecting it with the mainstream of the country was a challenge in the early sixties. A host of conscious educationists and public activists who were involved in bringing change in the status of Majuli came to this conclusion that it could be done only through the persuit of higher learning. In this regard a public meeting was held at Majuli Milan Sangha, Kamalabari in the month of March 1962 with the sole objective of having a discussion on founding a college to impart higher education to the Majulians. The meeting constitued a steering committee consisting of members from all communities to go ahead with the task. Late Keshabram Borah was made President and Late Krishna Kanta Goswami secretary of the steering commttee. It was a time when devastating floods were posing tremendous threat to their historic endeavaur but these two illustrious sons of Majuli toured every nook and corner on foot and mobilized public opinion, collected donations for the proposed college. Thus the dream of opening a college was now fulfilled. It is worth remembering that an another ideal son of Majuli Mr. Atul Chandra Goswami who was serving as a lecturer in History at North Lakhimpur College then was kind enough to agree to serve the newly established college as its honorary Principal. He continued his service in this capacity till 1995. This devoted son of Majuli passed away on the 18th of April 2012 bringing an end to a multi-dimensional life and career. Only a few days prior to his demise, the college family in association with a group of social servans from different parts of the island, conferred on him the title Siksha Ratna in recognition of his mammoth service to the field of education in the island. After its inception in 1962, the college funtioned in the building of Majuli Auniati Hemchandra High School for several years. Later in 1967, with the financial support from Auniati Satra and Dakhinpat Satra the college succeded in possessing a building of its own. Since then many other buildings have been annexed to the main structure with UGC grant and sometimes with financial aid sometimes aid from state government. The long standing demand of a library building was fulfilled in 1997 with UGC grant. Late Karuna Dutta, local MLA and Dr. Arun Kumar Sharma Ex. M.P. also extended financial help for building construction. In the recent past, the size of the college has fattened with some other buildings constructed in the premises. The notable of them are an RCC classroom building with financial assistance received under ‘Chief Minister’s Buniad Scheme, Govt. of Assam and the college Auditorium. A full-fledged auditorium has been a crying need for the college and the construction of the same is complete which has brought smiles to the face of entire family and well-wishers of the college. A UGC grant amounting Rs. 40,00000/- (Rupees forty Lakhs) was received for construction of a two story Girls’ Hostel which is now complete and ready for welcoming girls student. In addition to it an Administrative Building is completed. Thus the Majuli College has completed a glorious life of fifty years serving Majuli and Majulians.
