The Pondicherry Veterinary College later rechristened as Rajiv Gandhi College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (RAGACOVAS) is now renamed as the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Veterinary Education and Research (RIVER). The Pondicherry Veterinary College Society (PVCS) is governed by the Board of Governors headed by Thiru.S.Velmurugan as the Chairman. There are 12 Members on the Board of Governors with the Secretary (Animal Husbandry and Animal Welfare), Government of Puducherry as the Vice-Chairman and the Dean as Member-Secretary. Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Veterinary Education and Research is fully funded by the Government of Puducherry. The Institute is spread over an area of 59.21 acres at Kurumbapet, Puducherry and located about 7 kms from the main town. The campus is divided into Zone A which is the Main Campus housing the Administrative Block, Academic Blocks, Central Library, Instructional Farm Complex, Fodder Demonstration Farm, Canteen, Students' Cooperative Store and Aviary cum Fish Pond; Zone B located also at Kurumbapet has the student hostels for boys and girls, gymnasium and the staff residential quarters. Zone C located at Mettupalayam is about 2 kms from Zone A where the Teaching Veterinary Clinical Complex (TVCC) functions. Since its inception the college has made a spectacular progress owing to the excellent support extended by the Board of Governors and the Government of Puducherry. The Academic Departments have been established as per the mandatory stipulations of the Veterinary Council of India (VCI) and the current faculty strength is 56. The faculty are from reputed colleges and institutions of the country. The VCI has recognised the BVSc & AH degree program offered by this college with effect from 25/11/1999, the day the first batch of students completed their five year course. The BVSc&AH awarded by this college is included in the First Schedule of Indian Veterinary Council (IVC) Act. Each year the college admits 60 students, of which 30 are admitted through the Centralised Admission Committee (CENTAC), Government of Puducherry. The remaining seats are allotted to candidates selected by the Veterinary Council of India, apart from those selected by respective Union Territories. Foreign Nationals, NRI/NRI Sponsored individuals are also admitted based on their +2 marks and an Entrance Exam. The college is truly multi-ethnic and multinational given the fact that the students are drawn from different parts of the country and across the globe. The Institute is an active participant in the annual web-based All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) conducted by Ministry of Human Resource Development since 2010-11. The survey covers all Institutions in the country imparting higher education. The data collected will be useful in making informed policy decisions and research for development of the Education Sector (http://aishe.gov.in). ?

The Placement Cell was created to be a Career Counseling and Guidance Cell for the pre-final and final year students of RAGACOVAS. The Cell aims to create a database of all alumni who have passed through the portals of this hallowed institution and who have now spread far and wide across the world. Once you have finished filling the four mandatory fields, your data will be validated and if found matching with our records, you will be able to successfully complete your Registration. The Placement Cell is also actively involved in informing vacancies that arise in public/private sector for the benefit of the veterinary community at large. For this, one needs to click onto “Vacancies”.
The Instructional Farm Complex located in the college is established in an area of about 10 acres for housing different species of livestock and for fodder production. It consists of a cattle barn, calving box cum calf pens, sheep and goat pens, pig sty, kennel and small animal facility for housing laboratory animals and an amphitheatre for conducting practical on handling of various animal species. In addition three poultry sheds including one high rise cage layer house are also constructed for instructional purpose. The biogas plant and solar water heaters are commissioned in the Farm Complex with the help of District Rural Development Agency (DRDA). The Farm is serving not only the students and staff of this College but also being used for training of livestock owners. Livestock owners are also being brought regularly from villages to expose them to Scientific Management. Schools also send students to visit the Livestock Farm. This farm is open to all who wish to acquire knowledge and skill in rearing Livestock on scientific lines.
