The Fruit Preservation and Canning Institute (FPCI), Lucknow has been serving the country for the last 53 years in Uttar Pradesh. It is well recognized that food processing has a special importance during the period of stress and war. In India too the fruit & vegetable preservation industry got a rare chance to build itself during the Second World War. Need was felt to exploit the material resources for the benefit of the mankind and The Fruit Preservation and Canning Institute was established in 1949. Under the aegis of Directorate of Cottage Industries. Founder of the institute was Late P.B. Mathur (Fruit Industries Development Offices). The main objective of the institute was as follows.To support the broad national interest of supporting Horticulture & Food Processing Industries in maximizing their efficiency and effectiveness. To conduct research on problems associated with post harvest and processing technology for the speedy development of the processing industry. To equip the processing industry with well qualified and experienced personnel to shoulder the responsibility of private & public sectors. To provide short-term training to house wives, fruit growers and others for the utilization of the local produce and bring about a change in their food habits. Safe guard consumer interests regarding quality & nutritional aspect of proposed foods. Later on, Directorate of Fruit utilization was formed by linking up past of the Directorate of Agriculture and past of the Directorate cottage industries The location of the institute is at Lucknow and since 2002. It is known as State Institute Of Food Processing Technology. (SIFPT,U.P)
