You need to pursue a BTech in Mechanical, Electrical, or Chemical Engineering first, preferably from an IIT or NIT. After graduation, you can apply for specialization in nuclear engineering through MTech or join BARC’s OCES training program via GATE.
A nuclear engineer’s starting salary ranges between Rs 6 to 12 lakh per year in government sectors like NPCIL or BARC. With experience, especially in international or research roles, the salary can go beyond Rs 20 lakh annually.
IIT Kanpur offers a dedicated MTech in Nuclear Engineering. IIT Madras and IIT Bombay also provide nuclear-related electives under mechanical or energy systems. There is no standalone BTech in nuclear engineering at any IIT.
Homi Bhabha National Institute (through BARC Training School) is considered the best, followed by IIT Kanpur and IIT Madras which offer electives or postgraduate programs in nuclear or energy engineering.
The top Nuclear Engineering colleges in India are the Indian Institute of Technology - IIT Madras, IIT Kanpur, Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University, Jadavpur University, etc. There are only a few Engineering colleges in India that offer Nuclear Engineering courses.
