IELTS Computer-based Test score is released within 3 to 5 days, while, the IELTS Paper-based Test score is released within 13 days of taking the exam. The IELTS Test Score is released in the form of a report. It is mandatory to have an original score IELTS to apply to an institute that accepts the IELTS scorecard.

The IELTS Test Report Form provides the overall band score as well as band scores for each of the four sections: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. To make the scoring easy to understand, IELTS scores are reported on a 9-band scale with 1 being the lowest and 9 being the highest. Test takers can also check their IELTS online, available for 28 days, which however should not be considered an official confirmation of their performance.

What is IELTS Score?

Once all the four sections of IELTS have been conducted successfully, the results comprising an overall band and section-wise scores in the form of bands ranging between 0 to 9 are released. Universities abroad set the IELTS cutoff in the form of overall band score, section-wise score, or both. Hence, IELTS test takers must meet the IELTS requirement of a specific university in order to be shortlisted for the admission process. There are universities that can be applied for admission without IELTS scores even.

IELTS scores are rounded to the nearest whole or half band. For example 5 bands, 5.5 bands, 6 bands, 6.6 bands, etc. The same is released in the form of the IELTS Test Report Form (TRF) which remains valid for two years.

IELTS scores define the proficiency level of a candidate in the English language. Each IELTS score reflects the candidate's definite skill level, which is explained below.

The IELTS Scale

The IELTS test scores are reported on a 9-band scale, 1 being the lowest and 9 being the highest. The IELTS scale is designed such that candidates and universities to understand the same easily.

Does not have the ability to use complex language


Extremely limited user

The candidate can:

Understand only the general meaning in familiar situations.

Frequent breakdowns while  communicating in English


Intermittent user

The candidate has:

Difficulty understanding the English language



The candidate cannot:

Understand the English language, except few words and common sentences 


Did not attempt the test

The candidate did not answer questions. 

How is an IELTS Band Score Calculated?

IELTS overall band score is scaled on a range of 1 to 9. It is the average of all four sections (namely, reading, listening, writing, and speaking) of IELTS. The overall score is either whole or half band. For example, 6.0 bands, 6.5 bands, 7.0 bands, 7.5 bands, etc. Each section has an equal score range. Round off method is applied while calculating the overall IELTS score. The higher the IELTS band score, the better are its chances of getting accepted by applying institution. An 8.0 bands IELTS score will help the test takers to get accepted at any institution they might apply to.

As you can see from the above table, an average score that ends above .5 but is below .75 is rounded up to the next whole number. An average score that ends below .25 is rounded off to lower the next whole number.

IELTS Reading and Listening Scores

Given below in detail are the section-wise band scores for the IELTS test:

The IELTS Reading section and the IELTS Listening section comprise a total of 40 questions, each correct answer carries one mark. Scores obtained out of 40 are converted into the IELTS 9-band scale and are reported in both whole and half bands.

How to Check the IELTS Test Score?

Here's how candidates can check their IELTS scores:

  • The IELTS CBT Score/Result and IELTS Online test score are released online within 3 to 5 days after taking the test. The IELTS PBT test score is released within 13 days of taking the test.

  • The notification for the release of the IELTS score and the link will be sent on the registered email ID of the candidate.

  • The paper copy of the IELTS test score, i.e., the IELTS Test Report Form (TRF) is released within 13 days of taking the test. The TRF can be collected from the IELTS test centre.

How to Send the IELTS Test Report Form (TRF) to Institutions?

Most Institutions abroad accept original copies of the IELTS Test Report Form (TRF). Candidates can choose to send the test report directly to IELTS participating institutions from the test centres. For this, candidates will have to select the institutes while registering for IELTS, where they want to send the score. Once the test score is released, it will be sent directly to institutes from the test centre.

Sending the IELTS test scores directly from the IELTS test centre is optional. However, candidates can upload or send the IELTS scorecard individually while applying at the respective institute for admission. Most universities in the countries abroad do not accept photocopies of the IELTS test scores.

What if there is any Discrepancy in IELTS Test Result?

In case of any discrepancy in the IELTS score, candidates can enquire about the test results at the test centre where the test was taken within six weeks of taking the test. Candidates must choose the sections of the test for which they want to request a remarking.

Enquiring about the IELTS result is chargeable. However, the amount charged is refundable in case of an improved test score after enquiry.

The result after an enquiry is released within 2 to 21 days, which depends on various factors like the number of quotations raised for remarking among others. In case there is no response within 28 days, candidates must enquire about it at the test centre.

Country-wise IELTS Score Requirements

IELTS score can be used to apply to foreign institutions, including universities, immigration authorities, employers, and fundraising foundations, among others. The IELTS band score required by each institution is different, however, conforming to the prevalent trend in the country, an average IELTS band score can be estimated.

FAQs on IELTS Result/Scores

When is the IELTS exam result released?

The IELTS exam results/scores are released the following way: If you took IELTS on paper, your results will be available online 13 days following the test. If you took IELTS on a computer, your results will be accessible online 3-5 days after you took the test. In case you took the IELTS Online Test, you will get your results within the next 3-6 days.

How is the IELTS test result released?

IELTS test score is released in the form of a report, commonly called the Test Report Form and is scored in bands for each section ranging between 0 and 9. Your official Test Report Form (TRF) will be mailed to you by your IELTS test centre. The IELTS exam is rated from 0 to 9 bands. If you are taking IELTS for academic purposes, 6.5 or above bands is a good IELTS score. If you are taking IELTS for academic purposes, 7.0 bands is already an exceptional score and will be accepted at any university.

How can I check my IELTS score?

Your IELTS Life Skills results will be accessible online at 12:00 a.m. GMT on the seventh day following the test. Your IELTS results will remain online for 28 days although the same cannot be used as an official confirmation of your performance. In case you lose your Test Report Form or test results, please contact your test centre.

How can I send my IELTS score to the institute?

There are two ways to send your IELTS score to the institute of your choice, i.e. You can select institutes at the time of IELTS registration and send your IELTS score reports from the test centre or you can directly upload your IELTS score while applying for admission at a specific institute.

Yes, you can get your IELTS score rechecked. For the same, enquire about the test results at the test centre within the first 6 weeks of taking the test. You have to pay an extra charge to get the IELTS score rechecked. However, if there are any changes in your previous IELTS score, the amount will be refunded.

What to do if there is a discrepancy in the IELTS test score?

You can get the IELTS score rechecked in cases of discrepancy. The enquiry can be requested at the IELTS test centre. It is possible that you will be asked to retake one or more IELTS components. If IELTS examiners discover an error in your test, your results may be cancelled. You may also request a re-appearance for the full exam or a portion of the test.

What is the IELTS Test Report Form (TRF)?

The IELTS Test Report Form (TRF) is the official IELTS score report that has a section-wise IELTS score in the form of a band ranging between 0 and 9. TRF is a copy of your IELTS score. Each applicant is given one IELTS TRF that is valid for two years. Unless you are applying to Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) or the United Kingdom Border Agency (UKBA), you will only receive one copy of your TRF.

How is the IELTS speaking section scored?

The IELTS speaking section is scored on a range of 0-9 bands. Fluency, Pronunciation, appropriate use of grammar, and cohesion are some of the factors considered for scoring the IELTS speaking section. The speaking section is graded on four criteria: fluency and coherence, lexical resources, grammatical range and correctness, and pronunciation. The speaking band score is determined by these four factors, which are weighted equally.
