PTE Academic Syllabus

PTE is an online test that contains three sections: Speaking and Writing, Reading and Listening. PTE syllabus contains topics and their description for each section. 

The syllabus for PTE Academic has not undergone any changes in recent years. All topics covered in the syllabus of PTE Academic aim to evaluate  your proficiency in English. You are advised to check all the topics and PTE exam patterns before moving on the preparation spree.

COVID-19 Update

  • Pearson VUE has reduced the availability of testing for Indian candidates and also restricted the number of test-takers in each session in order to comply with official requirements and in the interests of protecting test takers and test centre administrators. 

  • PTE syllabus and test pattern remain the same. 

  • Students must confirm the availability of test dates and centres before PTE Registration.

  • Those who are going to take the test in the upcoming days must read the safety guidelines and follow the procedure at the test centres as defined by the authorities.

The candidate must give an introduction about himself in 30 seconds.

Read Aloud 

The candidate must read the texts aloud.

Re-Tell Lecture

The candidate must listen to the lecture and retell it. 

Repeat Sentence

The candidate must repeat a sentence after listening to a recording. 

Describe Image

The candidate must describe an image visualising it. 

Essay

The candidate must write an essay on a topic. The word count must be 200 to 300.  

Answer Short Question

The candidate must listen to a question and answer it in one word. 

Summarize Written Text

The candidate must read a text and write a summary in one sentence.

The candidate must rearrange text boxes appearing on the screen to form a correct sentence structure.

Reading and Writing: Fill in the Blanks

The candidate must read the text and fill in the blank spaces by dragging words from the box.

The candidate must read the text and fill in the blank spaces. The gap must be filled by selecting the option from the drop-down list.

PTE Listening Section

Description of PTE Listening Section is given in the following table:

The candidate must listen to a recording and write a summary in 50 to 70 words. 

Highlight Incorrect Words

First, the candidate must read the text of a recording that appears on the screen. Then, they must listen to the recording and identify the words in the text that differ from the recording. 

Fill in the Blanks

First, the candidate must read the text of a recording that appears on the screen. Then, they must listen to the recording and identify the missing words.  

Highlight Correct Summary

The candidate must first listen to a recording and identify the paragraph that is the most suitable summary for the recording.  

Multiple Choice, Single Answer

The candidate must listen to a recording and select a single response from multiple choice that best suits the recording.

Multiple Choice, Multiple Answer

The candidate must listen to a recording and select multiple responses from multiple choices that best suit the recording.

Select Missing Word

The candidate must listen to a recording and select the missing word from options to complete the recording.  

Write From Dictation

The candidate must listen to a recording and type it in a sentence.

From November 16, 2021, PTE Academic and PTE Academic UKVI will take just two hours to complete, instead of three hours. However, there are no changes to the overall format, question types or scoring scale.

11. How long does it take to cover the PTE Academic syllabus?

It varies from person to person. However, it usually takes at least two months.
