David Hare Training College - DHTC

On July 1, 1908 this David Hare Training College was established in the then Calcutta with a hope of preparing effective teachers. William Edward Griffith was the first Principal of the college. The college was started in a two storied building at 15 Colleges square with five rooms on its first floor. In the year of inception 20 graduates were admitted for the training. As the space shortage was a prime factor for the expansion everybody was thinking for its solution and then after a prolonged survey this area of Ballygunge was selected for the construction of new college building. In the beginning Hare School, Hindu school and Sanskrit Collegiate School were used for teaching practice of the trainees. In 1954 a separate college for women trainees was established at Alipore Hastings House and David Hare Training College became a male education institution. In the same year Hooghly Govt. Training College also came into force. In the year 1964 the ‘Bureau of Psychological and Educational Research, a new unit was added to David Hare Training College. The college had its Golden, Diamond and Platinum Jubilee Celebrations. In 2007 Centenary Celebration was observed with year long activities. In 1995 the college was honoured with ‘Institute of Advanced Studies in Education’. In 2002 M.Ed. course was started here.
