Loyola Institute of Business Administration (LIBA) awarded certificates to 30 transgender students for completing a skill course. The certificates were presented by Rev. Fr. Joe Arun, SJ, Director – LIBA. Prof CK Prahlad Centre for Emerging India at LIBA was in charge of managing all the activities - including scheduling and executing the program with the NGOs.
The students were enrolled for this course through the NGOs Thozhi and Sundar, which work for the transgender community. The classes were held over the weekends and were spread over 3 months. The candidates were initially given training in basic computer skills and administration functions. Later, they were taught accounting software such as Tally. The students appeared for interviews later and bagged jobs with the Chennai Corporation and Chennai Metro Rail services.
Talking about the program, Fr Joe Arun, SJ Director LIBA, said that the institute is guided by values and ethics so the impact LIBA makes in the lives of people is more significant than what the students learn and what the institute teaches them. The transgender students trained by LIBA had led a very difficult life but now they will earn respect in society as the skill course empowered them.
