On September 24, 1969, which is the Gandhi Centenary year, the NSS or the National Service Scheme programme was launched by the Union Education Minister, D.V.K.R.V. Rao with the aim of establishing a meaningful linkage between the campus and the community. Based on the idea of Mahatma Gandhi that the country could not move in the desired direction unless the students were motivated in work for the upliftment of the community, the NSS today has developed into a country wide programme which cares for the building up of a nation through the combined participation of students and teachers in social service. Having as its motto “NOT ME BUT YOU” the NSS aims at making education more relevant to the practical needs of the day; encouraging students to work together to promote social welfare; emphasizing dignity of labour and self help and encouraging youth to participate enthusiastically in the process of national development and promote national integration.
The Goenka College of Commerce & B.A. NSS unit began somewhat late in 2008, but it had since then encouraged the students who had enthusiastically enrolled themselves in the programme. On 21st February, 2009 the first seminar of the NSS was held as an awarness programme. The seminar lecture was delivered by Mr. T.K. Panda of Narendrapur Ramkrishna Mission Lokshiksa Parishad on “The Role of NSS in the Social Development” The seminar was attended and applauded by both students and teachers alike.
Currently Sri Asim Paul (Department of Commerce) is thew teacher-in-charge of the unit and also the Programme Officer. The college unit has been organising programmes regularly, with the dual objective of nurturing social awareness among the student community and promoting societal development.
