Review of Jawaharlal Nehru University

Infrastructure: JNU’s campus is huge and full of greenery, which makes it a really peaceful place to study. The library is one of the best in India, packed with books, research papers, and online resources. The hostels are decent and affordable, but there aren’t enough of them, so getting a room can be tough. Each hostel has a mess, common areas, and Wi-Fi, but some buildings feel a bit old and could use better maintenance.Overall, the infrastructure is solid, but if you’re expecting modern, high-tech buildings, you might be disappointed. The focus here is more on academics and discussion rather than fancy facilities.

Hostel: JNU hostels are super affordable and have a great student vibe, but getting a room isn’t easy since there aren’t enough for everyone. What’s Good? The fees are ridiculously low, which is a huge plus in a city like Delhi. You get basic facilities—Wi-Fi, a mess, laundry, and common rooms where people hang out. The best part? The atmosphere. JNU hostels are known for their late-night debates, discussions, and cultural events. You’ll always find people talking about politics, books, or just random life stuff. What’s Not So Great? Rooms are limited. A lot of students don’t get a hostel immediately and have to find a place outside. Some hostels are in bad shape. You might run into issues like broken furniture or water shortages. Mess food is just okay. Not the worst, not the best—just your typical hostel food. If you get a room, it’s a great experience. If not, finding a place outside can be a bit of a headache.

Infrastructure: Jawaharlal Nehru University was established in 1969 by an act of parliament.[6] It was named after Jawaharlal Nehru, India's first Prime Minister. G. Parthasarathy was the first vice-chancellor.[7] Prof. Moonis Raza was the Founder Chairman and Rector.[8][9] The bill for the establishment of Jawaharlal Nehru University was placed in the Rajya Sabha on 1 September 1965 by the then-Minister of Education, M. C. Chagla. During the discussion that followed, Bhushan Gupta, member of parliament, voiced the opinion that this should not be yet another university. New faculties should be created, including scientific socialism, and one thing that this university should ensure was to keep noble ideas in mind and provide accessibility to students from weaker sections of society. The JNU Bill was passed in Lok Sabha on 16 November 1966 and the JNU Act came into force on 22 April 1969 The Indian School of International Studies was merged with the Jawaharlal Nehru University in June 1970. Following the merger, the prefix "Indian" was dropped from the name of the School and it became the School of International Studies of the Jawaharlal Nehru University

Hostel: Students of the university, however, denied their involvement and termed it an act by some miscreants to discredit the JNU Students Union movement against the varsity administration against fee hike and hostel manual. A group of students later wiped off the slogans painted near the statue

JNU is famous for its low-cost education, and yes, that’s really true for most programs. For UG courses like BA (Hons.) or BSc, the total academic fees are just ₹881 to ₹5.51 lakhs for the entire course. And many popular ones like MA or PhD are affordable, too, like MA costs around ₹577 for the full two years, and PhD is about ₹986 overall. Only a few programs of JNU like the MBA or BTech have relatively higher fees. For example, MBA is ₹12 lakhs for the full course (₹8 L for OBC-NCL, ₹6 L for SC/ST/PwD). So while most programs are quite affordable, a handful are pricier.

Dear Student,

The conventional science courses are not available at JNU, New Delhi. However if you are looking for B.Sc.‑M.Sc. Integrated courses (like Ayurveda Biology), and others at Jawahar Lal Nehru University, then you can apply for the same. As SC category students, there are chances that you may get admission depending upon the number of applicants for the same. The cutoff for JNU is usually higher even for SC category. Dear Vani,

  • A stunning campus. The flora at JNU actually changes with the seasons. It's a great spot to be, especially in the spring. It makes you grateful to be alive.
  • There will be no ragging. As far as I am aware, every senior and professor is helpful. There is no tolerance for ragging.
  • You may listen to the knowledgeable and renowned for free: I got the opportunity to hear DALAI LAMA speak, and he is all he is known for and more.
  • There are no safety concerns. Everyone admires your uniqueness.
  • The political situation. Whether you like it or not, you will become more politically conscious, read more in order to comprehend, and so dispute.
  • A library that is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. All items are well-stocked and easily accessible.
  • JNU fees :  In a year, I pay around 600 Rupees in tuition costs.
  • There's no need to keep up appearances. You want to come to class in your PJs? Go ahead. You can do it without being frowned upon.
  • The instructors who are down to earth. You can dispute with them on a wide range of issues, and discuss if necessary. You can approach them with any issue.

Dear Muskan,

Through its School of Engineering, JNU offers a full-time BTech programme with two specialisations namely CSE and ECE. The programme persists for four years. The programme generally comprises a total of eight semesters of undergraduate coursework. JEE Main rank is required for admission to B.Tech programme at Jawaharlal Nehru University which is followed by JoSAA counselling. During the JoSAA Counselling, students who score over and above the JNU admission cut off are offered admissions subject to the availability of seats.

Hope this helps!

Hello Manish

Congratulations on securing such good marks but you must note that anyone can take admission in JNU only on the basis of CUET result. Hence there is no other alternative to take admission to the campus. The CUET 2023 result is likely to be out in the first week of July hence you can take admission on the basis of that result.
