What is BHU CAP PG 2026? (CUET PG vs CAP PG — Explained)

BHU CAP PG (Combined Allotment Programme – Postgraduate) is BHU's centralised online counselling and seat allotment system for all PG programmes. CAP PG is separate from the CUET PG exam, the two are often confused.

Here's the difference:

  • CUET PG 2026 — National entrance exam conducted by NTA (completed: March 6–27, 2026). This is your eligibility test.
  • BHU CAP PG 2026 — BHU's own portal where you register, fill course preferences, and receive seat allotment based on your CUET PG score.

You need both. CUET PG is the exam; CAP PG is the admission process. One follows the other.

Critical check: You must have selected "Banaras Hindu University (BHU)" as a university preference while filling the CUET PG 2026 form on the NTA portal. If you didn't select BHU at registration time, you cannot apply through BHU CAP PG 2026.

Eligibility Criteria For BHU PG Admission 2026

To be eligible for BHU PG admission 2026, candidates must fulfil the following requirements:

Minimum Qualification

  • You must hold a Bachelor's degree in a relevant subject from a university recognised by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU). Distance education degrees are accepted only if the course is recognised by IGNOU's Distance Education Council.
  • Final-year graduation students can appear for CUET PG 2026, but must have their degree completed and final marksheet ready at the time of actual admission. Provisional admission is cancelled if you cannot produce your degree at document verification.

Minimum Marks Requirement

Category

Minimum Marks in Qualifying Degree

General / OBC-NCL / EWS

50% aggregate

SC / ST

Pass (no minimum % for most courses)

PwBD

As per programme-specific norms

SC / ST — LLB (Hons) / LLM only

40% (Bar Council of India mandate)

Source: BHU Postgraduate Information Bulletin 2026 (PGIB 2026)

For CGPA holders — if your grade sheet does not mention percentage, submit a conversion certificate from your institution. BHU calculates aggregate percentage using total marks across all years, not just Honours subjects.

Other Key Eligibility Rules

  • No minimum age for most PG programmes, except where ICAR, AICTE, or Bar Council of India mandate one
  • Gap years are acceptable — they have no bearing on eligibility
  • You cannot pursue two regular full-time programmes simultaneously
  • Candidates already enrolled in Semester-III or above in a programme cannot reapply for the same course

How to Apply for BHU PG Admission 2026 (Step-by-Step Guide)

BHU PG Admission 2026 via CAP PG involves seven steps from CUET PG result to final reporting. Here is the exact process:

Step 1: Download your CUET PG 2026 scorecard

Visit exams.nta.nic.in/cuet-pg and download your scorecard. Save your NTA Application Number — you'll need it for CAP PG registration.

Step 2: Open the BHU PG form 2026 at bhucuetpg.samarth.edu.in

Click New Registration to start your BHU CAP PG registration 2026. Use your NTA Application Number to register. Your name, date of birth, gender, and category auto-populate from your CUET PG form and cannot be edited. Verify these match your documents exactly before submitting.

Step 3: Fill your programme preferences

Browse available courses on the portal. Add programmes in order of preference — first choice at the top. Fill as many preferences as you're willing to accept. You can add more programmes, but cannot change preferences after the window closes.

Step 4: Upload documents and pay registration fee

Upload scanned copies of all required documents (listed in the next section). Pay the non-refundable registration fee online:

  • UR / OBC-NCL / EWS: INR 300 per programme
  • SC / ST / PwBD: INR 150 per programme

Step 5: Check seat allotment results

Allotment results appear directly on your CAP PG portal dashboard. Log in after each allotment round. BHU conducts 4 rounds, typically from July to August 2026.

Step 6: Accept your seat and pay admission fees When allotted a seat, you have two choices on the portal:

  • Freeze — Accept this seat and exit further rounds
  • Float / Upgrade — Retain the allotted seat but stay in the queue for a higher-preference course in Round 2/3

Pay admission fees within 3–7 days of allotment. Missing this window cancels your allotment. The seat goes to the next candidate.

Step 7: Report to your department with original documents

In later rounds, physically report to your allotted department on campus for document verification. BHU's admission is confirmed only after this step. Read more about BHU Admission 2026

Documents Required for BHU PG Admission 2026

Keep these ready before starting your CAP PG registration. All uploaded files must be scanned copies; originals are needed only at physical reporting.

Documents for All Candidates:

  • Class 10 marksheet or birth certificate (for age proof)
  • Class 12 marksheet
  • All semester / year marksheets of graduation degree
  • CUET PG 2026 scorecard
  • Scanned photograph (less than 1024 KB)
  • Scanned signature (less than 1024 KB)

Additional Documents for Reserved Category Candidates:

Category

Certificate Required

SC / ST

Caste certificate from District Magistrate or equivalent officer

OBC-NCL

Non-creamy layer OBC certificate (must explicitly state "not in creamy layer")

EWS

Income and asset certificate (family income below INR 8 lakh per year)

PwBD

Disability certificate (minimum 40% disability)

BHU Employee Ward

Certificate from Dy. Registrar (Administration) or ERP-downloaded copy certified by HOD

Source: BHU PGIB 2026, Section 2.4

5 document mistakes that commonly cancel admissions:

  1. OBC certificate that doesn't mention "non-creamy layer" — rejected outright
  2. Category on CAP PG form doesn't match CUET PG records — leads to cancellation
  3. CGPA without percentage conversion certificate — will be disputed at verification
  4. Carrying only photocopies to physical reporting — originals are mandatory
  5. Photograph that doesn't clearly show your face — gets flagged during upload

BHU PG Fee Structure 2026

BHU PG fees are among the lowest for a central university in India. The tuition fee for most regular Arts and Science programmes at BHU departments is INR 1,500–INR 2,500 per semester, or roughly INR 3,000–INR 5,000 per year. Fees are higher for professional, special, and paid-seat programmes.

There are three types of programme fee categories in BHU:

  • Regular / General Programme — Standard fee, lowest cost
  • Special / Professional Programme — Higher fee for specialized, industry-linked programmes
  • Paid Fee Course seats — Supernumerary seats within regular programmes at a higher fee point

BHU CUET PG Cutoff 2026 (Expected)

The official BHU CUET PG cutoff 2026 will be released after Round 1 allotment in July 2026. Until then, the official Round 1 cutoff from 2025 is the most reliable reference available. All figures below are minimum CUET PG marks (raw score, not percentile) required for the first round of seat allotment.

BHU CAP PG Quotas:

  • C1 (BHU Quota): Reserved for students who completed their qualifying degree from BHU itself. Has lower cutoffs.
  • C2 (Non-BHU Quota): For all other candidates (the majority of applicants). Has higher cutoffs.

All tables below show C2 (Non-BHU Quota) minimum scores, applicable to most students applying from outside BHU.

BHU Seat Reservation Policy 2026

BHU follows Government of India reservation norms. All reserved category seats are part of the main intake; they're not supernumerary.

Supernumerary seats (over and above the main intake):

  • BHU Employee Wards: 15% extra seats per course
  • Sports Quota: Up to 6 supernumerary seats per Faculty (Arts, Science, Social Science)
  • Foreign Nationals: 15% supernumerary seats per programme (CUET PG exempted)

Tie-breaking rule (Inter-se Ranking): If two candidates have identical CUET PG scores, BHU uses these three criteria in order:

  1. Higher aggregate percentage in graduation
  2. Higher marks in the relevant CUET subject paper
  3. Older candidate (based on Class 10 date of birth) gets preference

BHU PG Admission 2026 Tips

  1. Fill maximum course preferences:

There's no disadvantage to filling 10–15 preferences. You can decline any allotted seat, but you can't add preferences after the window closes. Be thorough.

2. Understand Freeze vs. Float before Round 1 results

  • Freeze: You're happy with the allotted course. Lock it and exit further rounds.
  • Float / Upgrade: You want a higher-preference course if available in Round 2. Keep the current allotment as backup but stay in the queue. If no upgrade is available, you retain Round 1 seat.

There's no risk in floating — your existing allotment is safe unless you're upgraded.

3. Register early:

The bhucuetpg.samarth.edu.in portal experiences traffic surges near deadlines. Technical issues close to the cutoff date can cost you admission. Apply within the first 5–7 days of registration opening.

4. Category mismatch is a hard rejection:

Your category (General / OBC / SC / ST / EWS) must match between your CUET PG 2026 NTA records and your CAP PG 2026 registration. Any mismatch leads to cancellation without refund. Verify both before submitting.

FAQs

Yes. CUET PG 2026 is compulsory for admission to all regular PG programmes at Banaras Hindu University through the CAP PG route — this includes MA, MSc, MCom, MEd, LLB (Hons), LLM, and Agriculture PG courses. There is no separate BHU PG entrance exam. The only exceptions are MBA (requires CAT), MTech at IIT BHU (requires GATE), and medical PG courses (requires NEET PG). Foreign nationals are exempt from CUET PG and apply via bhu.ac.in's foreign students' portal.

No. BHU discontinued its own PG entrance test (BHU PET) from 2022 onwards. Admission to all BHU PG programmes (except MBA, MTech at IIT BHU, and medical courses) is based entirely on CUET PG 2026 scores. You only need to clear CUET PG and register on the BHU CAP PG portal. BHU conducts no separate written test.
