FAQs on NIT Rourkela BTech Eligibility Criteria

Can students with a lower percentage in Class 12 still apply for BTech at NIT Rourkela?
Students with lower percentages can apply only if they belong to reserved categories like SC, ST, or PwD, as they need 65% instead of 75%. For general, OBC, and EWS students, scores below 75% do not meet the eligibility unless they fall in the top 20 percentile of their board. Even if they meet percentage rules, they must also qualify in JEE Main. Both Class 12 marks and exam scores work together in the admission process.
Is PCM compulsory for NIT Rourkela BTech eligibility?
Yes, PCM (Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics) is compulsory for BTech admission at NIT Rourkela. The institute requires students to complete Class 12 with these three subjects, as they form the academic foundation for all engineering branches. Meeting the PCM requirement is also necessary to appear for JEE Main, which is the only pathway for BTech admission at NIT Rourkela. Without PCM in Class 12, candidates are not eligible to apply for the programme.
Do OBC and EWS students have different eligibility requirements for BTech at NIT Rourkela?
OBC and EWS students follow the same Class 12 requirement as general students, which is 75% or top 20 percentile, along with the compulsory PCM subjects. However, they must provide valid caste or income certificates to receive the benefits of their category during JoSAA counselling. Their JEE Main rank also plays a key role in seat allocation. These rules ensure that category-based reservation is applied correctly while keeping academic standards consistent.
Does NIT Rourkela have an age limit for BTech admission?
Yes, NIT Rourkela follows the age limit rule used in JEE Main. The maximum age for general students is 25 years. However, reserved category students such as SC, ST, and PwD get age relaxation of 5 years, meaning they can apply till they are 30 years old. However, it’s to be noted that the age rule is for JoSAA, and NIT Rourkela in itself does not have any such rule.
What is the minimum Class 12 score required for SC, ST, and PwD students at NIT Rourkela?
SC, ST, and PwD students applying for BTech at NIT Rourkela must score at least 65% in Class 12. This relaxed requirement helps students from reserved categories get equal opportunities in engineering education. Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics have to be the compulsory subjects in 10+2. Along with this, they must qualify in JEE Main, as admission depends on their rank in JoSAA counselling.

The Review of NIT Rourkela
By Soumya Ranjan Sahu | B-Tech in Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering | 2026

Overall: The overall review of my college that is NIT Rourkela will be on the positive side. This is because even though it lacks in some cases but has all the basic amenities and facilities that a student will be wanting in his/her college life.

Placement: Placements are always increasing at NIT Rourkela and this year only a student from the EI department got 1.2CR package which is the highest of all. The median package is around 13-14 LPA which is very decent one.

Infrastructure: The college is widespread across a total area of 1200 acres which comprises of the 600 acres of academic area and rest for roads and hostels. It has also got a new building that is 14 storey high and can accommodate many a classes at once.

Faculty: The faculty here is a mix of both the worlds. Some are very joyous and some are a bit low energetic. But if one will get to know them well all are great there is no doubt.

Hostel: Hostels are very decent here. There are a total of 11 hostels comprising of 7 boys hostels, 3 girls hotels and 1 for married couples. All hostels have internet connection upto 100Mbps and have basic amenities like gym, play-court, etc.

Overall: Experience of mine in this college was good.I've got some good friends some well.Qualified teachers who motivated us and helped us in each and every step

Placement: If I talk about placement facility given by this institute.I can say that it is very average. Not all the student got placed , only thirty to forty percent of the student got placed every year , which is very bad

Infrastructure: If I talk about infrastructure of our institute I can say that buildings were creatively made.It was restricted for outsiders to enter into the institute and yes playing area and libraries and cultural activities area over there

Faculty: Best part of this institute is that faculties who are working here are really well qualified.Well knowledgeable and headstudents and motivate students eating each and every step of their college life

Hostel: Best part of hostel is that Clealiness This is maintained by staff.Staff is really good food.Served here was of nice quality. It was restricted to outsiders to enter into the hostel area

Overall: If we see the college overally it is good in every aspect. Nirf ranking, infrastructure, faculty, coding culture all good. College campus is too big. College have special branch for student counseling called Institute counseling services, it has around 70 clubs including technical, cultural, sports, literature.

Placement: A engineering get famous by their placement stats. Our college last year in 2022 recorded 1500 placement offers from different company across India and foreign. Average package is 10 lakhs for all branch. Highest package takes cse departments.

Infrastructure: Infrastructure wise it is better than many premiere engineering college.separate building for all department except civil engineering department. All departments have their own lab. If we talk about sports infrastructure it has 2 big stadium one for cricket sachin tendulkar stdium, one for football dilip turkey stadium. And many more small grounds for others sports like handball, kho kho, kabadi, volleyball. It has two sports Complex one names P T USHA sports Complex and one under construction. One Olympic level swimming pool. One separate modern building to encourage entrepreneurship.

Faculty: This college consist of around 200 faculty belongs to different departments. Some faculties are good some are not that good. By academically all are good.

Hostel: It has 3 girls hostel, and 8 boys hostel. The biggest hostel is vikram hall of residences. It includes 1024 rooms. Every hostel has their own sports infrastructure, own garden, own mess. Every hostel has their Hall management body elected by boarders. Main important point regarding hostel is security all hostels are super secured especially girls hostel.

Overall: Offering a diverse range of courseswith a focus on research and innovation.Infrastructure is impressive providing modern facilities to students.Faculty expertise and industry collaboration enhance the learning experience. There is huge number of students which leads to crowdy classrooms and limited personalised attention.

Placement: Industry eaders for on-campus recruitment.Placement assistance and training contributes to students readiness. There is an intense competition whic may cause stress. Some departments may face challenges for placing all the students

Infrastructure: Featuring state-of-the-art laboratories, well equiped classrooms and modern hostels. The campus is vast, offering a serene and conductive environment.Library provides ample amount of resources for research and study. There are occassional maintenance issue in classrooms and hostel rooms, wifi connectivity can be inconsistence which affects the course work

Faculty: It is renowned for expertise and research, creates a student friendly environment with valuable mentorship and industry collaboration Communication issues with a few faculty due to language barriers.High student to teachers ratio can affect the attentiveness to each of them.

Overall: The college is one of the best institute of India for Engineering.Holding the top ranking in Nirf and also meeting the expectations in terms of everything(learning, college life, friends, professors except some). You will never regret joining this institute.

Placement: Placement is decent for most of the branches and some branches like mining are having 100 % placement in 3 consecutive years. For Electrical you have to work hard more but the outcome will surpass your expectations.

Infrastructure: Some of the work is still going like making of new sport complex and Hostels .But the infrastructure is well planned and few buildings are very creative. Also there are plenty of grounds so no worries for any game to play.

Faculty: Faculty are like very supportive and helpful. They are very experienced and skilled .But they only show the path rest is upto the students. But like some are very cooperative and few are just doing their job .

Hostel: For the freshers V.S hall of residence is alloted for boys and for girls I don't know maybe KMS and CVR. And every hostel has all facilities available like reading room ,day canteen, night canteen , indoor games like carrom and chess.
