Calcutta University Exploring Shorter Exam Schedule : Calcutta University is exploring significant reforms to enhance the academic framework of its undergraduate programmes. In the first syndicate meeting, Vice-Chancellor Ashutosh Ghosh proposed a shortened examination timetable and increased class hours to address persistent challenges in syllabus completion and learning continuity. This initiative follows concerns over the existing semester system, implemented in 2017 to 2018, which has strained resources and disrupted schedules.

Affiliated colleges have long struggled with prolonged exam schedules, which have led to the suspension of classes, even for non-exam batches, affecting the academic flow. As per University Grants Commission guidelines, each semester mandates a minimum of 90 teaching days, but CU colleges average only 30 to 35 days. The syndicate discussed consolidating odd semester exams on one day and even semesters on another, enabling simultaneous classes and minimising disruptions. "It is imperative to implement reforms to uphold educational standards," remarked a syndicate member.

A principal emphasised, "The absence of a structured academic calendar hampers student engagement; immediate action is needed." The meeting reviewed utilising vacation periods for compensatory classes, a practice adopted by government colleges, to make up for lost hours. To address faculty shortages, CU is prioritizing filling 445 vacant PG teaching posts (of 860) and seeking legal consultations for non-teaching staff recruitment. "Boosting infrastructure and teaching support is key to restoring CU’s legacy," added an official.

These measures aim to curb learning losses, enhance outcomes, and align with UGC norms. While no official timeline is set, stakeholders anticipate phased implementation. More updates will be shared on CU’s official website www.caluniv.ac.in shortly. The university’s affiliated colleges, which have been serving thousands, hope the reforms bring much-needed stability. The initiative reflects CU’s commitment to revitalizing undergraduate education amid evolving academic demands.
