CBSE Warns Students on Fake Universities: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has now come out with a new advisory requesting students to check the UGC recognition status of colleges and universities carefully before joining them. With admission season around the corner, it is an effort by the board to ensure students do not fall prey to unrecognized / self-acclaimed colleges/universities, which might harm their academic future.

Seeking education from such colleges that do not possess adequate facilities. This advisory is a result of continuous initiatives taken by the UGC to make students aware of fake and unrecognised universities functioning in India. The list of such universities is regularly updated by the UGC on its official web page and warns students about the dangers of approval and accreditation.

CBSE clarified that attendance at an unrecognized college can result in severe implications, such as invalid degrees, no employment, and problems in pursuing any further studies. Students often fall prey to false advertising or misrepresentation and enroll in unrecognized colleges without awareness or verification.

To make counseling for students stronger, CBSE has instructed its affiliated institutions that they must counsel Class 10 and Class 12 students, along with their parents, on the importance of checking UGC recognition. It is required that students be counselled on how to check the status of institutions for higher education in the “HEIs” corner of the official page of UGC.

The board has also directed schools to widely disseminate the advisory by putting it up on notice boards, circulating it on the school website and school circulars, and during parent-teacher meetings. The idea is to ensure that every child gets the right advice before taking key admission-related decisions.

CBSE concluded its advisory by encouraging students to make applications only to institutions recognized by UGC to ensure that students have a safe future in academic and professional aspects. In view of increasing incidents being reported about unauthorized universities misleading students, this is a timely move initiated by the board.
