The decision taken by Mumbai University to hike the exam fees did not go well with many students. Several student bodies opposed the hike and demanded the varsity to rollback the hike. Members of ABVP or Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad threatened the administration of varsity that they would launch a protest if the varsity does not roll back the fee hike.

The varsity decided to hike the exam fees at a senate meeting. It has been increased by 50% than the previous year. The hike in exam fees will come into effect from the next academic session. For instance, an undergraduate student who paid Rs. 500 as the exam fees during the academic session 2016-17, has to pay Rs. 1000 as the exam fees from the upcoming academic session.

M.A. Khan, Registrar of Mumbai University explained that the varsity has to increase the exam fees, as the varsity decided to increase the remuneration for examiners. Therefore, it will be possible to hike the remuneration to examinees only if the university hikes the exam fees. Recently, the varsity has also launched an onscreen assessment of answer sheets.

Mumbai Secretary of ABVP, Mr. Rohit Chandode pointed that the varsity has been earning around Rs. 8 crores from re-evaluation fee and the varsity has enough funds for the development activities. Therefore, it is not judicial for the varsity to hike the exam fees. The varsity needs to concentrate on providing quality education and facilities to students.

A student body was of the opinion that the onscreen assessment of answer sheets reduces the expenses towards logistics and workforce and there is no point of increasing the exam fees.
