Addressing the convocation ceremony of the University of Goa, President of India, Shri. Pranab Mukherjee emphasised that all the universities shall try and produce men and women of character and substance and not merely professionals of competency. It is time for the varsities to prepare graduates for a competitive global economy, he added.

Honourable President further indicated that the varsities and institutes must focus on imparting quality education by adopting best global practices and work towards achieving world-class academic management.

Suggesting that institutions and universities shall work towards achieving excellence, Shri. Pranab Mukherjee urged that they can do so by providing the best of amenities to the students. Further, they shall update their models of teaching regularly to make them adaptive in nature. The teaching process must be changed at par with latest trends as well as changing learner profile.

India has around 600 million youth in the age group of 25 and they need to play a significant role in the development of the country, he added.

Speaking about the Massive Online Open Courses or MOOCs, the President pointed that an alliance between knowledge networks, pedagogy and IT-enabled platforms will contribute towards the development of MOOCs.

He further added that more emphasis on research ecosystem will also be a good move. Shri. Pranab Mukherjee mentioned that the universities must take up joint research initiatives and foster talented researchers across fields.

He suggested all the academic institutions shall introduce industry relevant matter in course work. Indian institutes and universities will excel if they provide an international exposure to students and faculty, he concluded.
