Calicut University Overview

Calicut University was established in the year 1968 and is situated in Malappuram, Kerala. The Calicut University Act of 1975, passed by the Legislative Assembly of Kerala, governs the university. In the NIRF Ranking 2023, Calicut University bagged 70th rank in the ‘universities’ category and placed in the rank band 101-150 in the ‘overall’ category. It has been recognised by UGC and accredited by NAAC with an “A+” grade for the 4th time. It is a state university and the largest residential college-affiliating university in Kerala, with 34 departments and 406 affiliated colleges.

Calicut University Admission

Calicut University admission is done both on the basis of entrance exams and on the basis of merit. Calicut University conducts its own exam CUCAT for admission in 49 specialisation courses such as MA Economics, MSc Applied Zoology, MA History, etc. B.Tech admission is done based on JEE Main/KEAM scores and B.Arch admission is done considering the candidate’s performance in  JEE Main/KEAM/NATA.  Calicut University admission in MBA programme is done through CMAT/KMAT/CAT. GATE is accepted for admission in M.Tech programme. For courses like BBA, B.Com, LLB, etc, the admission is merit-based. Moreover, candidates must note that Calicut University UG admission is done through UGCAP, PG admission through PGCAP and PG-Integrated courses admission through IPCAP. The minimum qualification is that candidates must obtain an aggregate score range of 45%-50% marks in 10 + 2 in the case of UG admission and 50% marks in aggregate in the case of PG admission.

Calicut University Campus and Infrastructure

Calicut University campus is spread across 520 acres of land and is equipped with facilities like a library, computer labs, a gym, internet, guest rooms, an auditorium, and a convenience store, among others. Out-of-town students can use the hostel services for accommodation at the university. Students are provided with indoor and outdoor sports facilities within the Calicut University campus for extracurricular activities. 

Cafeteria

On the campus of Calicut University, there are a total of five cafeterias available to students. The cafeterias provide mini-snacks to full-time meals served at affordable prices. There is a university canteen as well beside the cafeteria joints. 

Library

In 1971, the C.H. Mohammed Koya Library was founded. More than one million books, 8500 journals, 250 research journals, and 35,000 e-books are available. The library also provides services for students with disabilities. The library is open on all days besides official holidays. 

Laboratories

Calicut University has dedicated laboratories across all departments. Some of the laboratories available for drama, fine arts and life science departments are Shri Prof. S Ramanujam studio, theatre lab, scenography lab, seven M.Sc labs, a cell culture facility, a computer lab, three instruments room and eight research laboratories. 

Calicut University Hostel

Calicut University has separate accommodation facilities for boys and girls. Calicut University Ladies Hostel comprises five blocks and each building is equipped with a reading area with four different daily newspapers and a television, Wi-Fi connectivity, mess, etc. Calicut University hostel fees for girls is Rs 175 for single rooms and Rs 80 for shared accommodation. For boys, the facilities provided in Calicut University hostels are reading rooms, daily newspapers, television,  internet, board games, electricity, water purifiers, bike and car parking spaces, two badminton courts, a volleyball court and mess. The fee is Rs 200 per month.

CUCAT is the entrance exam conducted by Calicut University for admission in PG, 5-year Integrated PG, B.P.Ed, LLM with double specialisation courses offered in the Calicut University teaching departments, university centres, self-financing centres and affiliated colleges. Calicut University offers admission to a total of 49 courses through CUCAT. How to apply for PG courses at Calicut University 2023?

In the first step, candidates shall visit the Calicut University admission website and complete the registration in the following three steps. Candidates applying for PGCAP need to provide their mobile number, and complete the mobile number verification using the OTP received in the number. Once the mobile number is verified using OTP, candidates need to create a CAP ID by providing the basic details. After the successful submission of the details, a CAP ID and password will be sent to the registered mobile number. With the CAP ID and password received in the registered mobile number, the candidate can log in and fill the registration page by providing the required data. A PwD applicant is not eligible for admission to the Geology course. The blind students are not eligible for admission in science subjects involving practicals, except B.Sc computer science, IT and BCA. Deaf and difficulty hearing students are not eligible for reservation in science subjects involving practical except B.Sc computer science/IT/BCA, B.Sc Mathematics, B.Sc Plant Science, B.Sc Hotel Management and Catering Science & B.Sc Hotel Management and Culinary Arts.

UGCAP is the centralised admission process carried out by Calicut University for admission in UG courses. All candidates who have qualified for the HSE and VHSE of the Government of Kerala under the ‘SAY’ scheme and compartmental examination of CBSE are also eligible for admission to first-year undergraduate programmes in the same academic year. Apart from HSE / VHSE of the Kerala State Board and all regular higher secondary examinations conducted by other state boards, AISSCE (Class 12) of CBSE, ISCE and NIOS board candidates who have passed the course with a minimum of five subjects, including English is also eligible for admission in Calicut University.  The candidates possessing a certificate with “Eligible for Higher Studies” issued by the Kerala State Literacy Mission Authority are also eligible for admission in Humanities and Commerce programmes.
