Calicut University Overview

Calicut University is a state university which is situated in Malappuram, Kerala. It was established in the year 1968. The Calicut University Act of 1975, passed by the Legislative Assembly of Kerala, governs the university. It has been recognised by UGC and accredited by NAAC with an “A+” grade for the 4th time. It is the largest residential college-affiliating university in Kerala, with 34 departments and 406 affiliated colleges. University of Calicut campus is spread over 520 acres of land. Currently, there are 2,229 students out of which 93% of them are PG students. There are a total of 22 international students and 130 faculty. University of Calicut facilities include CSIF, a museum, an animal house, a botanical garden, a park, an observatory, a manuscript library, libraries, ICT-enabled classrooms and seminar halls.

Calicut University courses along with its specialisations are available at diploma, undergraduate, integrated-PG, postgraduate and doctoral levels. The courses are offered to students in the stream of science, arts, commerce, engineering, technology, management and more. All the major courses at the university are available in regular, part-time as well as distance learning modes. Popular Calicut University courses include B.Tech in Electrical and Electronics Engineering, B.Tech in Biotechnology, B.Sc in Zoology, B.Sc in Forensic Science, B.Sc in Chemistry, BA, M.Tech, MA and MBA. 

Calicut University admission is done through a centralised admission process- UGCAP for UG programmes, IPCAP for integrated PG and PGCAP for PG courses. Calicut University also conducts its entrance exam - CUCAT for admission in 49 courses. MA Economics, MSc Applied Zoology, MA History, MSc Environmental Science, MCA, MSW etc. are a few such courses. JEE Main/KEAM scores for B.Tech, JEE Main/NATA/KEAM scores for B.Arch, and GATE scores for M.Tech are considered for admission in Calicut University. For admission to the University of Calicut MBA course, KMAT, CMAT, and IIM-CAT scores are accepted.

Calicut University has a placement cell that is responsible for carrying out placement-related activities. It also has a dedicated portal which provides regular updates on job placements. As per the Calicut University placement statistics available in NIRF Report 2023, 151 students were placed out of 824 students. The median salary offered to UG students was recorded at Rs 2.64 LPA. The median salary was within the range of Rs 2.42 LPA - Rs 4.68 LPA for PG students. How to Apply for Admission at Calicut University

The Directorate of Admission looks after the overall Calicut University admission process for its departments and affiliated colleges. Calicut University admission is carried out through a centralised admission process for UG and PG courses. The admissions at the university are also done through entrance exams for a few courses like B.Tech, B.Arch, M.Tech, MA, MCA, MBA etc. Admission in the integrated PG courses is done through IPCAP. Before carrying out the admission process, candidates need to meet the Calicut University eligibility criteria set for the courses. Given that Calicut University admission is done through centralised admission process,  applicants must complete the following steps in order to be accepted.

Calicut University Admission Process 2024

Step 1: Once the eligibility criteria are met, candidates have to take part in the centralised admission process. Candidates can opt for 20 programmes of their choice on a priority basis from the Calicut University affiliated colleges, centres, or departments for UG admission and 10 programmes of their choice in case of PG admission.

Step 2: Now to carry on with the Calicut University admission process, applicants need to visit the Calicut University official website. The UGCAP/IPCAP/PGCAP for the first-degree programmes will be conducted in two phases: Phase 1: Submission of Application, and Phase 2: Fee Payment. There are a total of four parts in the Calicut University phase 1 admission process.

Step 3: CAP ID Generation- Candidates need to fill up their personal information as per the instructions given in the window. Candidates then have to click on the ‘Register’ button. An OTP will be sent to the registered mobile number. Candidates need to enter the OTP received. The CAP ID and password will be sent to the registered mobile number through SMS. Candidates can now log in with the details sent on their registered mobile.

Step 4: Student Profile- In this step, candidates will be directed to the student profile. They must follow the following steps to complete part 2 of the Calicut University application process- 

  • Entering the number of chances taken to pass the qualifying examinations. 10 marks will be reduced for each additional chance taken to pass the qualifying examination subject to a maximum of 25 marks. The number of chances means the number of chances taken for passing any part or part of the qualifying examination. Betterment/Improvement examination will not be considered as a chance. The number of chances printed in the qualification certificate should be entered.
  • Specifying the board/university of the qualifying examinations.
  • Entering the stream of study of the qualifying examinations.
  • Eligible applicants can fill in the reservation details. A valid certificate must be produced at the time of admission.
  • Uploading and resizing the photograph in jpeg format.
  • The details entered can be edited before the final submission. 
  • To move to the next part, click on the “Save and Proceed” button.

Step 5: Qualification Details- In case the marks are displayed automatically verify the details, and if not, candidates need to enter the qualification details. The details entered can be edited before the final submission. To move to the next part click on the “Save and Proceed” button.

Step 6: College Programme Selection: Priority and index marks are the base of the allotment of seats in the UGCAP/IPCAP/PGCAP. Candidates need to furnish the details of colleges and programmes according to the priority. Those who wish to apply for the community quota in aided colleges shall mention it in the application. Candidates can also view the options submitted and can edit the options, if necessary. 

Step 7: By clicking the button ‘Preview’, candidates can verify and ensure that the details submitted are correct. If the details entered are correct click “ Save & Proceed”. The candidates can edit the data entered including photos till the final submission is done. After the final submission, the data can be edited by using the edit button on or before the last date for online registration.

Step 8: For phase 2, candidates need to make the fee payment, by clicking on the ‘proceed and pay’ button. During the payment, the website will be redirected to the  Calicut University-Instant Web Payment System (CUIWPS) page where the student can select the desired choice of payment. Payments can be done in the following mode: State Bank online payment, Payment Gateway, Akshaya Centres & Friends Janasevana Kendram, Post office.

Step 9: Selected candidates will have to appear for the counselling process, through which they will be allocated seats for Calicut University admission. Such candidates must visit the university campus, pay the admission fee, and submit documents for verification to complete the Calicut University admission process.

Calicut University Placements 2023

Calicut University placement report 2023 has not been officially published. As per the data available in NIRF Report 2023, four UG students were placed and the median salary offered was Rs 2.64 LPA. Among the PG students, seven PG 1-year students, 129 PG 2-year students and 11 PG 3-year students were placed in 2022. The median salary offered to PG 1-year, PG 2-year and PG 3-year students were Rs 3.96 LPA, Rs 2.42 LPA and Rs 4.68 LPA, respectively. Calicut University placement cell arranges on-campus and off-campus interviews for the students of undergraduate and postgraduate courses. Universities, banks, various businesses, F&B, hospitals, non-governmental organisations, etc. hire graduates from this university. Numerous events are planned by the placement cell to aid with Calicut University placement process every year. Some of the top employers that come to the campus of Calicut University each year include TCS, Infosys, Capgemini, Flipkart, Amazon, Delhivery, Glauben Associates, and Microsoft among others. Motivational talks are presented by well-known people and Calicut University graduates in association with the placement cell. Calicut University Scholarships

Calicut University scholarships are offered by MHRD, UGC and other agencies for students in all of its departments. Candidates need to fill up an application form and also go through the verification process to avail the below-mentioned scholarships.  

Central Sector Scholarship Scheme: Students studying undergraduate and graduate degrees full-time in public and private colleges and universities are eligible for the for college and university students, which is administered by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD). They must have earned at least 55% on their prior qualifying exam to qualify for this award.

State Merit Scholarship Programme: The Keralan government offers this scholarship to students who performed well on their qualifying examinations in the past. The preceding qualifying examination must have been passed with at least a 75% grade for students to be eligible for this scholarship.

Jilla Merit Award Scheme: Students who earned high marks in the last qualifying examination and are members of the SC or ST communities are eligible for this scholarship from the Keralan government. They must have received at least 70% on their prior qualifying exam in order to qualify for this award.

Suvarna Jubilee Award: The university offers this award to students who received outstanding marks in their previous qualifying exams and who are members of the SC or ST ethnic groups. Students must have obtained a minimum grade point average of 60% on their prior qualifying exam to qualify for this Calicut University scholarship.

Research Award Programme: Calicut University provides this award to students who have excelled in their research efforts. Students must receive at least 70% on their research dissertation to be considered for this scholarship.

Dr. P.K. Aruna Endowment Award for Academic Excellence: It is presented to the dissertation student who earned the highest score in order to meet the minimum requirements for the M.Phil. and Ph.D. degrees.

Scholarships for Students with Disabilities: University of Calicut provides a number of scholarships for students with disabilities. These awards are intended to assist the students in covering their tuition costs.

Calicut University Campus

Campus amenities of Calicut University include a library, computer labs, a gym, internet, guest rooms, an auditorium, and a convenience store, among others. Calicut University computer centre houses a large number of internet-connected machines. It facilitates paperless documentation and makes it possible for UoC to administer exams online.  It features five cafeterias that serve meals and snacks at affordable prices. Students may use the athletic facilities at Calicut University campus for extracurricular activities. The university offers both indoor and outdoor sports facilities.

Out-of-town students can use the hostel services for accommodation at the university.  Calicut University hostel rooms are spacious with necessary conveniences made available to the students. For the use of the students, the Institute has a health centre with first aid supplies. In 1971, the C.H. Mohammed Koya Library was founded. More than one million books, 8500 journals, 250 research journals, and 35,000 e-books are available there. The library also provides services for students with disabilities. The library is open on all days besides official holidays at the Calicut University campus.

What is CUCAT?

CUCAT is the entrance exam conducted by Calicut University for admission in PG, 5-year Integrated PG, B.P.Ed, LLM with double specialisation courses offered in the Calicut University teaching departments, university centres, self-financing centres and affiliated colleges. Calicut University offers admission to a total of 49 courses through CUCAT. The online registration fee for admission in PG/Integrated PG /BPEd programmes through CUCAT is Rs 550 for general and Rs 240 for SC/ST students. In case of LLM admission, the fee is Rs 750 for general and Rs 350 for SC/ST students. Candidates need to pay Rs 80 for each additional programme applied.

In the first step, candidates shall visit the Calicut University admission website and complete the registration in the following three steps. Overall: Very pleasing environment for design creation as well as jamming with all other batches in the institute.Much more exposure compared to other colleges in the state providing the same degree

Placement: Passed out students or seniors have been taken into very experienced firms also independantly started their own firms from our college since the exposure received is much better here

Infrastructure: Great studios and services provided along with extensions for completing or developibg work in the campus itself.Hence improving social interaction between the students.

Faculty: Experienced faculties providing efficient input on design ideas and iterations for improvising and evolving the designs of the students inorder to get great structures.

Hostel: Great food provided with different menu for the week with ambient dining mess area along with lobbies for jamming and working in different zones of the hostel building.

Overall: Avani institute of design located in calicut stands as a beacon of architectural excellence. The faculties in here is well educated and has great ideas of how an architecture studio should work. The studio projects given here just great so that it helps us in interns

Placement: Placements from avani institute happens to almost all major firms. Most of placements offer short amount of salary and it reaches upto 50k per month. Abroad placements also happens at avani

Infrastructure: Infrastructure in avani institute of design is good with a welcoming view of a mountain through the openings from all the studios. Also it has a nature connection

Faculty: Faculties are well educated and has a great idea to lead the studios. They Help us in every aspects. They also gives ideas if the studenst are stuck with their design

Hostel: Hostel is not that that majority of the students go out after one or two years. Also the food is not that good and students go out to have food from outside shops

Calicut University has been ranked 70th among the top universities in India by NIRF Ranking 2023. Calicut University has off-campus centres in Thrissur.

Placement: Calicut University provides placement and internship opportunities to all its students. Calicut University placement 2023 report is yet to be released.
