History and Ranking
Drexel University was established as Drexel Institute of Art, Science and Industry in 1891. It was founded by Anthony J. Drexel. The main mission of the institute was to create opportunities in ‘practical arts & sciences’ for students from all backgrounds. It acquired the status of a university in 1970. Prior to this, it was known as the Drexel Institute of Technology since 1936. As per the US News and World Report 2020 edition, it is ranked #97 among the national universities in the United States. For QS World Ranking 2020, Drexel University stands at the top 500 universities in the world.
Infrastructure and Campus & Courses
Drexel University has four different campuses namely, Philadelphia Campus, Center City Campus, the Queen Lane Campus, and the Academy of Natural Sciences. Another site for the College of Medicine is under construction in West Reading, Pennsylvania.
Accomplishments & Alumni
For research in clinical practices, Drexel University joined the foundation to create an endowment of $20 million. It helps the university to strengthen its research capabilities. The multidisciplinary research initiatives at Drexel University are excellent. It brings together faculty with great experiences necessary to tackle complex issues. The entrepreneurship institute at Drexel University brings education and entrepreneurship through experiential learning and practical guidance for the budding entrepreneurs. Since the university was established as an institution that imparts education for arts. It has artist alumni like Violet Oakley and Frank Schoonover (illustrator). Some of the other alumni are Paul Baran (founding father of the internet), Josh Woodland (invented the barcode). Michael Anderson NBA Basketball player, Raj Gupta, CEO of Rohm and Haas.
Student Diversity & Visiting Companies
The university has approx. 14000 students and 700 faculties making the student-teacher ratio as 17:1. The student satisfaction at IUP is 75%. The gender distribution of students at IUP is 42% male and 58% female. The university is welcoming towards international students and has 18% of international students coming from six different continents. The Student Center for Diversity and Inclusion engages Drexel's LGBTQIA, AHALANA and international student bodies through direct advocacy. It has the maximum percentage of international students attending the university in the entire State System. The top employers who hire from the University include Facebook, PwC, Deloitte, Amazon, and Accenture to name a few.
