Ethiraj college for women Campus Facilities - Hostel Fees, Infrastructure, Address

Situated in the heart of the city of Chennai in 9 acres of campus area, the College stands self-contained with prestigious structures measuring a total plinth area of 3,48,751sq.ft. This admirable infrastructural facility and the sound vision on which the Institution is built is upheld by the successive Managements, Principals, Faculty and Students and this has gained for the College the five-star status from NAAC and the College with Potential for Excellence (CPE) award from the UGC. 

Library - 

The Library’s primary mission is to serve the academic community with high-quality resources, services and act as a gateway to information to meet the needs of the institution’s diverse instructional, research and outreach programmes.

The Library housed in a sprawling 32,000 sq.ft.. three-storeyed building provides a stunning range of library collections and information services to the teaching, research and service functions of the user community. The Library houses over 91,917 books and 52 print journals and is also sufficiently supported by over 6000 online journals (EBSCO’s ‘Academic Search Elite’ and ‘Business Source Premier’.)The research wing has the doctoral and M.Phil dissertations for ready reference.

Question banks and books for civil services examinations, bank entrance, TOEFL, GMAT, GRE, CAT, SAT, NET, SLET etc., are available. The Conference/ Seminar Hall is well equipped with gadgets like the LCD, OHP, Television, and Multimedia System.

The automated open-access library functions from 8.00 A.M. to 5.00 P.M. It also offers Network Resource sharing (Internet Centre) and Photo copying facilities.

Hostel - 

located in sylvan surroundings, the three block hostel facility is a home away from home for many students. The hostel facility of the college was started in 1948, by our beloved founder, Shri. V.L. Ethiraj. In those years, when women’s education itself was rare, our founder went the extra mile and thought about the security of the women who take to higher education. So he benevolently gave away his house that was situated within the campus premises to be converted to a hostel.

Started by 169 students and teachers, the hostel facility of Ethiraj College has now been enhanced to include two individual blocks (one PG block and two UG blocks) situated within the college premises and can accommodate around 500 Indian and Foreign Nationals and NRI’s.

In addition to this, the hotels have a gym, reading and recreation rooms, spacious dining halls, and telecommunication facilities. The hostels also house a full-time doctor and many corporate hospitals are available in the vicinity for emergency situations.

• E-cell was started in 2007-2008 with Ethiraj College becoming a member of NATIONAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP NETWORK (NEN) in collaboration with STANFORD UNIVERSITY, IIM (A), HARWARD BUSINESS SCHOOL, IIT (BOMBAY), BITS PILANI and S.P. JAIN INSTITUTE OF MANAGEMENT
• “E-Square” the E-cell of Ethiraj College aims at nurturing the students and moulds them into bright business minds by offering workshops, speaker sessions and competitions. In the year 2014-2015 the E-cell conducted 22 certificate courses like screen printing- manual and DTP, mural art, cosmetology, terra cotta jewellery making, glass painting, etc with the idea of enabling the student to start their own ventures using the skills acquired from the courses.

National Service Scheme (NSS)

• The College NSS has three units under the University of Madras. 300 volunteers from the undergraduate programs actively participate in various social service activities. The program officers for 2014-2015 were Dr. R. Rajalakshmi, Dr. P. Padmini & Dr. Prabhavathi.
• NSS volunteers actively participated in rallies, walks, walkathons, workshops and programs organized by various governmental and non-governmental agencies. They participated in several competitions organized by city colleges and won prizes. Volunteers visited homes like Sevallaya, Kaakkum Karangal, and Nalmanam.

Highlights 

• - A feather in our cap was when Dr. P. Padmini was nominated by the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor as a member of the NSS Advisory Committee of Madras University.
• - On 20th November, 50 NSS volunteers of our college got Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam best volunteer award.
• - Lavanya of II B.Sc. Maths got selected and represented the college in the Republic Day parade held

Youth Red Cross

• The Youth Red Cross, an enthusiastic student wing of Ethiraj College with 150 student members from the aided stream has co-ordinated and organised many activities for the year 2014-15, under the head in-charge Dr. Mrs. D. Uma, Associate Professor the Department of Economics, President, Abhinaya K. II. B.Com and Vice President, Suganthi of II B.Sc. PBPB.
• The events for the year began with an orientation programme for the first year students. On 26/06/2014 the students went on a rally on the Marina beach from the light house to the University to observe the “International Day” against drug abuse and illicit trafficking. Students actively participated in the commemoration of the 65th anniversary of the Geneva Convention by actively participating in the competitions held by the Indian Red Cross Society. Blood donation camp was organised in the Indian Red Cross society. The Governor of Tamil Nadu Dr. K. Rosaiah inaugurated the function. Students voluntarily donated blood.
• Joining hands with the other extension clubs of Ethiraj College, a Human Chain was formed to create awareness of the importance of mother’s milk. On 10/06/2014 the Loyola College, Chennai organised a district level inter-collegiate YRC Meet on the topic “Human Rights” in which our students actively participated. Awareness on organ donation was conducted by the YRC students at Loyola College where our student volunteers created awareness among youth.
• On 17/01/2015 an award for the best participation in the Indian Red Cross Society activities was given to the YRC wing of Ethiraj College by the Vice Chancellor of the University of Madras, Dr. R. Thandavan.

Red Ribbon Club

• The Red Ribbon Club, a unit of NSS was launched in the Aided Stream. Two programmes on AIDS awareness were organized in the college. Our Volunteers participated in "Kalaingar Life Saving Scheme" launched by the Government of Tamilnadu. A bilingual news paper launched by the South India AIDS Action Programme (SIAAP) and the UNICEF were distributed to all the students of the college. On a regular basis RRC volunteers participated in various activities like visisting AIDS Awareness Exhibition held at Kilpauk Medical College, AIDS Cell Government General Hospital and World Heart Day Program

• Ethiraj College for Women (Autonomous) has the unique distinction of being the first college in the city to start a second unit of RRC in the evening college. It was started in the year 2006 with the objective of not only creating awareness on HIV/AIDS but also to inculcate social sensitivity and develop social responsibility in the students.

ENACTUS ETHIRAJ IN SERVICE OF THE DOWNTRODDEN COMMUNITY

• Enactus, the social entrepreneurship venture of Ethiraj College has a strong membership base of 500 students.
• Realising the need to be the change makers it has come up with the idea of “Project Pleurotus” (mushroom cultivation) for the current year, to benefit a downtrodden community.
• The project proposal was duly approved and supported by the College Management with the required funds and space.
• Subsequently, a Business Advisory Board (BAB) was created comprising of experts to serve as mentors for the project.
• The BAB includes:With due assistance from Equitas, a Micro Finance company, eight women from Thideer nagar, a slum in Chennai were identified as the target community.
• A shed, highly conducive for mushroom cultivation was constructed in Campus II, Annexe block of the college under the guidance of Famec Tech Pvt Ltd..
• As a next step the women were scientifically trained by Mr. Ragupathy, an expert cum researcher in mushrooms to cultivate, harvest and pack the mushrooms hygienically.
• The project was subsequently chosen to receive grant from ‘Blue Dart’ and retail giant ‘Walmart’ under its prestigious ‘Women Empowerment Grant’.

Citizen Consumer Club of Ethiraj College, the brain child of the former Chairman, Thiru. Dr. A. M. Swaminathan, was inaugurated on 2nd December 2008 by Mr. K. Rajaraman I.A.S, Commissioner, Department of Civil Supplies and Consumer Protection. The motto of the club is to enhance awareness among the student community about the rights and responsibilities as a consumer. It has constantly focused on imparting this knowledge to encourage students to stand up against malicious practices prevailing in the society. The club has 500 students as members. Eminent personalities from various walks of life are invited to address students on topics ranging from Product Standard and Hallmarking, Food Adulteration and Right to Information Act. Student members get an opportunity to interact and work with learned professionals and consumer activists with rich experience to combat for solutions on one platform.

Consumer Connect: The CCC of Ethiraj has its own newsletter – the Consumer Connect – which is a bi-annual publication, covering a wide range of consumer related issues and facts such as product testing, certification marks, sustainable consumption, health and environmental issues. This venture is the first of its kind among the citizen consumer clubs of all schools and colleges in Tamil Nadu.
