Madras School of Economics (MSE), Chennai offers post graduate teaching and research courses in the field of economics such as M.Sc. in General Economics, M.Sc. Financial Economics, M.Sc. Applied Quantitative Finance, M.Sc. Actuarial Economics, M.Sc. Environmental Economics and Ph.D in Economics courses. Madras School of Economics was founded in 1995 as a private post-graduate institution for teaching and research in economics. MSE offers a two-year Master's program in General Economics, Financial Economics, Applied Quantitative Finance, Actuarial Economics and Environmental Economics affiliated to the Central University of Tamil Nadu, and a Ph.D. programme affiliated to University of Madras. The primary aim is to create a centre that would nurture quality teaching and research programs in economics. Within a short span of time it has realized this objective and is today counted among the premier institutes for higher education and research in economics in India. The National Assessment and Accreditation Council awarded MSE an “A” grade. The Ministry of Environment and Forests has designated MSE as a Centre of Excellence in Environmental Economics. The aim is to attain standards prevailing in some of the best schools of economics abroad. The hope was that after MSE had become fairly well-established, it could be approved as a deemed university and then it would have both autonomy and the approval of the University Grants Commission.
The objective of MSE is to equip the youngsters to meet their crying needs. The approach adopted in the graduate program strives to provide the students a good foundation in economic principles and theory and to enable meaningful application of this knowledge to a wide range of issues. They are equipped with the knowledge and facility to use the necessary quantitative tools. The emphasis is to encourage an economic way of thinking.
