The institute was established in the year 1962, with the prime objective to meet the emerging need of skilled technicians at diploma level felt by the state government to start with courses of three core branches viz. Civil, Mechanical and Electrical over taken up. The Institute started functioning in the initial years in the premises of Multi-Purpose school, near kachahari chowk Durg, Mr. M. A. Quereshi was the founder principal. Looking to the growing need of technicians at Bhilai Steel Plant, the Metallurgy Branch was introduced in the year 1964. Within a short period of 2 years the Institute shifted to its own premise in the year 1964, which was constructed with a vast campus spread over 40 acres of land in the heart of the city. Over the years more courses were added in the curriculum such as Modern Office Management (earlier known as Commercial Practice) in 1976, Electronics & Tele-communication in the year 1981 and Computer Science as well as Information Technology in the year 2000. Need was also felt for Part Time Diploma Course for the working personnel in the neighboring industries and therefore started in the year 1984 with Civil, Mechanical and Electrical discipline. The institute is well located on G.E. Road at 38 Km away from Raipur, the capital of Chhattisgarh state. It is easily approachable from Mumbai- Kolkata Railway line. The famous Bhilai Steel Plant, Bhilai is just at a short distance of 15 minutes from the institute. The campus has its own academic block, Separate hostels for boys and girls, residences for staff.
