Indira Gandhi Medical College - IGMC

Himachal Pradesh Medical College at Shimla (HPMC) was established in the year 1966 with admissions of 50 students in the first batch. Indira Gandhi Medical College is affiliated to Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla. With the establishment of Medical College in the State, the hopes and aspirations of the people of the state were met with the standards of health services going on and students benefiting with the advantage of staying home and getting better educational avenues. Medical College then had a modest beginning with makeshift arrangements for hostels etc., but ecstasy of joining the Medical College located in Shimla with its salubrious climate, took away the agony Himachal Pradesh Medical College was renamed Indira Gandhi Medical College (now popularly known as IGMC in abbreviated form) in 1984. Admission facility was increased to 65 in the year 1978. Now MBBS seats have been increased 65 to 100. 2794 number of MBBS students have passed out from this Medical College till 2014. The post Graduate courses were started in 16 disciplines in the year 1981.Now these are increased 16 to 20 disciplines. So far 923 postgraduates and 377 in diploma students have passed out from IGMC till date. More PG courses have been added from the session 2002-2005 in the specialties of Radiotherapy (Oncology) and Skin & VD. Total number of PG Degree seats are 96. DNB in Cardiology and MCH in CTVS have been started by IGMC. 187 B.Sc Paramedical students have passed out till 2014. Now PG courses in the disciplines of Psychiatry and Pulmonary Medicine have been started. 50% seats are available at IGMC through all India Quota from 2005 onwards.15% seats in M.B.B.S. course are available to all India Quota and 2 seats are available to NRI candidates. Indira Gandhi Medical College Shimla has also been granted the status of Regional Cancer Center by the Govt. of India, thus providing much needed comprehensive cancer care to the cancer patient. Essential periodical up gradation of facilities for investigations and treatment have been going on regularly and in the year 2005 facility of Open Heart Surgery has been made operational and in 2006 MRI facility has been added. Second Cobalt Unit & 64 slice MDCT are also operational.

  • That Dr. A.K. Sahai, Prof, Head Pharmacology got award " Eminent Educationist Award November 2012" by National and international compendium, New Delhi. 

  • Dr. Bargavee Venkat (3rd year PG student) awarded certificate for securing first position in the "17th Residents' Review Course Quiz held in October 2013" and conducted by "Radiology Education Foundation, Mumbai." 

  • Dr.Santosh Minhas and Dr.Poojan Dogra are the recipient of IOC Dr.Stya Paul Awards 2012 for Best Case Report.

  • The team of PG students stood first in the preliminary round out of 12 teams participated in YUVA FOGSI- North Zone meet in 2013.

  • Dr. Manika Saluja won the best paper award in AOI HPchapter conference in March, 2012 held at Bilaspur HP.

  • Dr. N. k. Mohindroo , Dr. Ramesh Azad and Dr. Jagdeep S. Thakur were invited faculty in ENT update conducted by PGI , Chandigarh in September, 2013.
  • Dr. Vidya and Dr. Vishal won the Inter college quiz held in PGI, Chandigarh on 20-21 September 2013. Dr. N.K. Mohindroo was invited guest speaker in 26th, All India Rhinology Society conference held in Baroda September 2013. 
  • Dr. N. K. Mohindroo & Dr. Jagdeep S. Thakur were nominated as governing body members of All India Rhinology Society in Baroda September 2013.
  • Dr. Rajeev Bhardwaj was invited to present Challenging Cases in Transcatheter based interventions at TCT San Francisco California Sept 2013

Indira  Gandhi  Medical College, Shimla (IGMC) came into being  in 1966  at Snowdon which was the residence of Lord Kitchnar (1873-74) the erstwhile Commander-in Chief  of  British-Indian  Army. Over the years, the Medical College has grown to a stature of a modern & prestigious medical institution in the Country.

The college is having 33 departments equipped with latest machinery and  equipments. Several of its alumini are the faculty  members in  well known Medical Colleges in  India and  abroad. Multi-storied buildings at Snowdon, Kamla Nehru hospital together contribute 872 beds to IGMC.

Sophisticated equipments like MRI Scan, C.T. Scan, Cobalt Units, Gamma Camera, Selectron, Upper G.I. Endoscope, Colonoscope,Bronchoscopy,  Nuclear  Medicine  facilities, ERCP, Ultrasonography, Haemodialysis, Pulmonary  function test  including  diffusion studies  and blood  gas analyzer, Intensive Care Unit, Pacemaker, Holter Monitor, Colour Doppler Echo-cardiography, image  intensifier for orthopaedics and Cardiology. Tread mill test, E.C.G.,Laparoscopic surgery, transurethral  resectoscope, laser and microwave diathermy for physiotherapy are in operation. Open Heart Surgery is also now operational. Beside these a New 64 slice CT Scan 

There is a library maintained by the college for the students/staff. The library contains books on all the topics related to medical field.

IGMC, Shimla consists of 2 sets of hostels viz. BHABA, RAMAN and Girls hostels maintained by the college.
