Overall: IIT Roorkee, previously known as Thomson College of Engineering was founded in 1849. After independence, it was renamed to University of Roorkee by Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru and used to hold it's own exam which was considered harder to crack than JEE itself. After 2001, it was recognised as 7th IIT. With a rich heritage and centuries of legacy, IIT Roorkee is undoubtedly one of the top engineering colleges in India
Placement: When it comes to placements, IIT Roorkee performs fairly well. There used to a small problem earlier as some companies found it difficult to travel to Roorkee because of poor connectivity through road. But now it has changed and you get all the entire spectrum of recruiters jumping at the opportunity to hire the geeks (CG=9+) on Day 0 and Day 1. Just like flash sales of Mi Phones on flipkart, all the B.Tech CS people are all sold out by the end of one week People with CGPA (7-9) across all branches end up with fairly decent packages in their hands by the end of the month. The remaining lot especially the 5 pointers wait for miracles to happen and they do happen every now and then during the season. There are some companies who tend to overlook the CGPA and see some talent in people which they think is useful for them. I remember one example where a 5 pointer guys was selected as he told the interviewer that he has memorised all the phone numbers in his contact list.
Infrastructure: IIT Roorkee clearly stands out at the top when it comes to infrastructure. There are huge grants from Central Government to IITs, most part of which is spent on it's 365 acres of campus. Highly maintained sports grounds and courts, state of the art gymnasium, awesome cafes (Bru and Alpahaar). If you are a snooker/billiards enthusiast, you will have an opportunity to play on the best tables in the country in Student's Club of IIT Roorkee. Modern air conditioned classrooms are newly built (they are called LHC) but department classrooms are quite old but well maintained.
Faculty: You have to do a post doctoral degree from a reputed college (abroad) to be a assistant professor in IIT Roorkee. But the fact is, most of the professors are from university days and you won't find them making much effort in making it interesting for students. Most of the professors seem to despise the students and it is pretty evident from their behaviour on and off the classroom. Tutorial assignments are mostly dated to 1970s-1990s. End term exam paper questions are also often repeated. A few professors assign the task of evaluation to their PhD and M.Tech assistants. But not all of them are same, there are a few professors in every department which students can really look up to and they go the extra mile to help students with their academics, internships, placements and what not. If you get in, you'll have to work hard to get along with the faculty. Otherwise it will reflect directly on your grade sheet.
Hostel: There are 8 Boys and 2 Girls Hostels. Most of the students get a single room for them in first year itself (Rajendra Bhawan). Hostels are then changed every year and you get the hostel with your classmates as per proximity of hostel to the department. Wifi is amazing, rooms are spacious. Hostels are one of the most memorable parts of your stay in this college.
