The School of Planning and Architecture (SPA) began as a Department of Architecture at Delhi Polytechnic in 1941. It was later integrated with the School of Town and Country Planning, established in 1955 by the Government of India. Affiliated to Delhi University (DU), SPA Delhi achieved the status of ‘Deemed to be a University’ by the Government of India, through the Ministry of Education and Culture in 1979. SPA Delhi was recognised as "An Institute of National Importance under an Act of Parliament" in 2015.

SPA Delhi courses are offered at undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral levels in the fields of architecture, design, planning and management. Admission to these courses is done both based on merit and entrance exam marks. The entrance exams accepted are JEE Main, CEED and UGC NET. The SPA Delhi fee structure ranges from Rs 88,000 to Rs 1.6 lakh approximately. The institute has a dedicated placement cell which is responsible for conducting the recruitment drive. In 2024, SPA Delhi median package offered to the UG 4-year courses students was Rs 5.23 LPA. The School of Planning and Architecture Delhi has hostel facilities for both male and female students. 

SPA Delhi admission is granted to students who qualify for the entrance exam and meet the college’s cutoff. Moreover, students also must meet the minimum eligibility criteria for admission. For B.Tech admission, JEE Mains score is considered, and the allotment takes place through JoSAA counselling, admissions for this year BTech courses are ongoing, JoSAA has released the cutoff for various rounds, interested candidates can check the result on the official website. For MTech admissions, GATE scores are considered followed by CCMT counselling. This year MTech admissions have already been done, for next year the registrations will start from August 2025.

The School of Planning and Architecture Delhi scholarships are provided to meritorious female students, students belonging to financially weaker sections, physically challenged students, etc. These SPA Delhi scholarships are given according to the rules and regulations of the Government. The college provides education loans as well.
