IIT Lower Branch vs NIT CSE vs BITS Pilani: What Should You Choose in 2026?

One of the biggest confusions that JEE toppers often face before the counselling is whether to aim for CSE at a tier-1 NIT, choose a lower branch at a premium IIT, or settle for the premium tech culture at BITS Pilani. With the rapid shift in the job market, the demand for CSE and specialized programs, like AI/ML, Data Science etc. has increased significantly, leading to more confusion among students in the 3,000-20,000 rank range. As per the recent JoSAA cutoff trends, NIT in top-tier NITs usually close within 2,000-5,000 ranks. Less competitive branches in newer IITs close admission between 8,000 and 12,000 ranks. So, to make the right decision for your 2026 counselling, first compare the IITs, NITs and BITS Pilani campuses, closing ranks, placement scenario, and other parameters.

Claude AI and Coding: How an AI Assistant is Changing the Way we Program

Those days are gone when programmers learned coding through traditional practices, through textbooks, tutorials and from mentors. Today, an AI assistant like Claude AI introduces a new workflow through which the coding process has been eased. Programmers and developers do not need to depend on searching various sources to learn coding anymore. Contextual guidance with a simple prompt in natural language is the way to an instant answer.

For example, a student can ask Claude AI instantly if encountering a Python error. A simple prompt, "Why am I getting an IndexError in this code?" on Claude AI shall provide the exact cause of the error and the solution accordingly.

Claude AI has actually made programming more accessible for beginners, as they always face challenges in learning coding due to the steep learning curve. The common struggles that beginners always face are -

NITs offering B.Tech in Artificial Intelligence through JoSAA 2026: Total Seats Available, Cutoff Details

A rank better than 5000 is required for General category students to pursue B.Tech in Artificial Intelligence at different NITs as per previous years’ cutoff trends. This clearly indicates that the competition level has been increasing for AI and its allied courses, considering the changes in the job market. With automation taking place at several top companies and AI-assisted tools like Claude AI easing out the coding/ programming process , the rise in demand is definitely inevitable.

Not every student can make it to B.Tech AI offered by IITs due to higher cutoffs/ competition level. Therefore, NITs could be the secondary option, which is also the best alternative for IITs. Pursuing B.Tech AI from an NIT is not a bad choice, as these NITs offer decent placements. A detailed explanation of the list of NITs offering AI courses, previous years’ cutoff trends and placement details has been provided here.

Note: These AI courses were introduced in NITs in 2021. Only NIT Surathkal launched the 4-Year B.Tech AI course in 2021, and the other institutions have launched it in subsequent years. Technically, the first batch placements of B.Tech AI graduates are yet to happen, and the exact placement stats are only provided for NIT Surathkal here.

Important Suggestions to B.Tech Robotics Aspirants

Here are a few expert suggestions for students aspiring to pursue a Robotics course –
  • Mere pursuing a robotics course shall not land you a job, and it is your responsibility to enhance the practical knowledge apart from the theoretical knowledge
  • It is advisable to pursue short-term certificate courses/ training programmes in AI, ML, Full Stack Development and Claude AI while pursuing B.Tech so that it adds value to your profile
  • Always maintain 80% or above in academics so that you maintain a good academic record track, which is important if you are appearing for interviews
  • Try to be clear about your career options and put your 100% effort into building a successful career. Think only about the course, practical implications and try to come up with innovative projects
  • Make sure you participate in various seminars and workshops on Robotics happening across the country (if possible) to enhance knowledge and contacts with industry people
  • Look for internship opportunities in AI/ Machine Learning/ Robotics fields. Make sure you pursue an internship during the holidays/ vacation
  • Try to participate in more on-campus & off-campus placement drives to enhance career options
  • Try to be more active on LinkedIn and keep posting your insights on Robotics and AI. Follow key recruiters and make sure your profile is up-to-date

 Dear Student,

For M.Tech studies at VIT Pune, admission is primarily based on GATE 2026 scores, not the MHT-CET percentile, as it is for UG engineering courses. For the EWS category, you generally need a good GATE score, but top branches like CS/IT often require a score in the 350 to 450 range in Round 1.  If you are actually asking about the MCA program, the MAH-MCA-CET 2026 exam percentile required for EWS would likely be above 98.5+ for a top-tier college like VIT Pune

Thank You!.

Hi student,

Based on the previous year’s trends, your admission chances in the course of MCA at Vishwakarma Institute of Technology with less marks in the MAH MCA CET 2025 exam are skeptical, as the college offers admission to students securing higher ranks. However, there are various other colleges that offer admission in the MCA course with less marks in the exam, such as P. R. Pote Patil College of Engineering & Management, Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute(VJTI), Mumbai Education Trust's Institute of Computer Science, Mumbai, etc.

We hope this answer clears your query.

 Hi student,

Based on the previous year exam analysis, securing 98 marks out of 200 in MAH MCA CET 2025 exam can get you a percentile ranging between 70-80. With this percentile, you can expect your rank to be around 5000-10000, which should be sufficient for admission to some of the good MCA colleges in Maharashtra. You can also check our MAH MCA CET 2025 marks vs Rank analysis to find more about your chances in the MAH MCA CET 2025 counselling process.

We hope this answer clears your query.
