AP Intermediate Examination 2026: The Board of Intermediate Education (BIE), Andhra Pradesh, has brought significant modifications in the first year Intermediate Public Examinations from this academic year, with the introduction of the NCERT syllabus, the examination pattern, marking system and answer sheet have been changed. These changes aim to align the evaluation to national standards and help students with enough space and clarity to write answers better.

One of the major changes is the introduction of 32-page answer booklets for first-year students in subjects like Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Commerce, Economics, History and Political Science. Until now, students were given only 24-page booklets, but with the introduction of one-mark questions and more questions overall, the space for writing the answers has now become insufficient. Students of Biology will be given two booklets - one for Botany and one for Zoology - both having 24 pages , as their question paper is bifurcated into two distinct parts.

The pattern of examinations in some subjects has also been modified. Mathematics , which was earlier divided into two papers of 75 marks each, has now been turned into a single 100-mark paper . The written examination will be of 85 marks for Physics, Chemistry and Biology. The pass mark has been notably adjusted, instead of the previous mark needed to qualify (following the 35% rule) was 29.75 marks, students now need only 29 marks to pass in these first-year subjects. In the second year, students are required to obtain 30 out of 85 marks, and overall passing marks for the two years have been modified from 59.5 to 59 .

Another important change is that there will be no choice for one-mark and two-mark questions in any subject. Students must answer all questions in these categories. In Biology, the marks have been divided into 43 for Botany and 42 for Zoology . Geography will continue with a 75-mark written exam, but will still be counted as 85 marks with practicals included. The practical marks in the second year have also been slightly increased, with students now required to score 11 marks out of 30 to pass.

A total of 10.40 lakh students will appear for the first and second-year Intermediate Public Examinations this year, including 5.35 lakh first-year students. While major changes have been made for first-year students, the second-year pattern remains unchanged for now. The NCERT syllabus and associated exam updates will be extended to second-year students starting from the 2026–27 academic year, marking a complete transition to the new system.
