Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) Summons Principal of Hindu College over Girls’ Hostel Fee

Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) Summons Principal of Hindu College over Girls’ Hostel Fee

DCW or Delhi Commission for Women has summoned the Hindu College’s principal seeking a brief report regarding the fee structure of hostel, rules and regulations for girl students. The commission also directed the principal to give a detailed insight on the steps taken by the authorities of the University of Delhi in ensuring equal hostel fees and non-discriminatory rules for boys and girls pursuing various courses in the varsity.

Earlier, DCW had issued a notice to the principal of Hindu College over the high hostel fee and discriminatory hostel rules. Even though the college assured to ensure uniform fee structure and nondiscriminatory rules, DCW has been receiving various complaints against the college administration. There were speculations that Hindu College has decided to shut down the girls’ hostel. Therefore, the commission had issued a notice in this regard and the administration failed to provide required information before the stipulated date.

Students complained that the hostel rules and fees of girls’ hostel continue to be discriminatory. Now, DCW has directed the principal of the college to appear before the commission on August 2, 2017.

Delhi Commission for Women also wrote a letter to the University Grants Commission requesting to expedite various pending proposals. The letter stated that many colleges were not able to construct hostels for girls and were failing to ensure nondiscriminatory fee.

The proposals made by various colleges for the construction of girls’ hostels is still pending. DCW urged the UGC to complete the process the soon. The commission further indicated that lack of girls’ hostels on the campus obstructs or comes in the way of female students who wish to pursue higher education in the colleges of their choice.
