Becoming the 10th university in Russia as part of one medical faculty, Saratov State Medical University was established in 1909. The university admitted 92 first-year students under its first rector and a famous Kazan surgeon - V. I. Razumovsky. The university is managed by a Rector who is the head of the Academic Council. Teaching at the institution is carried out for over 4 thousand students, residents, interns and graduates at 75 departments. Saratov State Medical University is globally recognised by various medical councils like NMC (National Medical Commission), The US Department of Education, The General Medical Council of Britain, FAIMER (Foundation for Advancement of International Medical Education and Research) and WHO (World Health Organisation). It is also enlisted with the World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS).
Infrastructure, Campus & Courses
Saratov State Medical University offers training under eight faculties: Medical, Dental, Paediatric, Preventive Medicine, the Faculty for Working with Foreign Students, Pharmaceutical, the Faculty of Pre-University Education, the Faculty of Advanced Training & Professional Training of Specialists and the Institute of Nursing Education. These different departments at the university are headed by competent specialists that include more than 30 academicians (who are also corresponding members of the Academies of Russia and International Academies), 3 honoured workers of the Higher School of the Russian Federation, 5 honoured scientists of the Russian Federation, 106 doctors of Medical Sciences and 452 candidates of Science. Apart from its excellent infrastructure to support high levels of educational quality, SSMU also has several gyms, a swimming pool, a summer recreation camp and a winter sports base to ensure its students' overall development.
Accomplishments & Alumni
Standing tall as a modern centre of Science, education and culture in the region, Saratov State Medical University has carried out 120 graduations in over 90 years. That university has trained about 45,000 specialists and boasts of graduating over 600 highly qualified doctors on an annual basis. In the last 5 years alone, Saratov State Medical University has defended 43 doctoral and 173 candidate dissertations at the institution. It has also published 40 monographs, many educational and methodological articles and literature. These numbers are a testimony to the universitys growing intellectual potential. SSMU has a powerful scientific potential with many of its scientists travelling to international conferences with their reports in the specialised fields.
Student Diversity & Employment Opportunities
In 1991, the Deans office at Saratov State Medical University began working with foreign students and continues to do so even after over thirty years. Natalya Ivanovna Kudryashova became the first head of the department of Russian as a Foreign Student and organised an educational process called First Wave inviting 50 Indian students for the Medical programmes. This was after 72 years of its existence that the first batch of foreign students appeared at the university, comprising only Indian students. Today, over 600 students from more than 55 countries are receiving medical education at the university. According to SSMU, many of its graduates are working successfully in various medical institutions in their native countries, Middle East, Europe and America.
